He is not only focused on one thing. I dont know anybody thats done more to highlight and talk about the border disaster that is underway right now as we speak. I had the privilege of serving here when jeh johnson was secretary of homeland security. I have a very high opinion of jeh johnson. I think he is one of the finest Public Servants i ever met. He was asked on one occasion to define what was a crisis on the southern border. He said any time you have more than 1,000 illegal entries a day, you have a crisis. We have 10 or 11 times that every single day. In that tide of humanity thats coming across, there is a boatload of fentanyl coming to kill Tens Of Thousands of all of our constituents. There are Human Traffickers who are taking advantage of young men and young women and, frankly, predators in our own country, and they are bringing them across, not by the tens or 20s or dozens, but by the hundreds and the thousands. There are amongst that flow of people, people that wish us ill, people who are not fleeing from oppression, people who are terrorists or criminals that are coming into our country for no good reason. Now that is not an immigration problem. Thats a Border Security problem. They are not the same thing. [ applause ] we can debate immigration. Thats a worthy debate. We should never have to debate Border Security. Nobody has highlighted that issue like my friend jim jordan. Nobody has done more as a Committee Chairman to move legislation that would meaningfully deal with this problem. This, my friends, on both sides of the aisle, but with all due respect, you need to look at this seriously. Dont confuse it with immigration. You wont have Immigration Reform until you have Border Security. This has been the number one champion of that. Finally, i want to talk about something that can bring us together. There are a lot of things we disagree on. Most of us do not disagree about the security of the state of israel. [ applause ] all of us on both sides of the aisle reacted with horror and with deep sympathy and with legitimate outrage at the crime that was perpetrated against the people of israel in the last week. All of us. And all of us know that they are within their rights to respond forcefully and swiftly to defend their people and punish those who brought that upon them. [ applause ] in a moment of crisis we are in a moment of crisis we should come together and act. We know we cant do that without a Speaker Of The House. Now, its a narrow majority, but my friends and i are in the majority. And we need to produce a spea we have a candidate who we know where he will stand on issues that are important. We know where he is going to stand on spending, because its where he has always stood. Not like he changed over the course of his career. I know what he is going to do on the border. I have read hr2. I have seen what his committee produced. Its policy and change that will provide security for the american people. Finally i say this on a bipartisan basis. I know he will stand up for israel and i know in that area, we can come together. That crisis is on us now. We may get a request almost any time to act. We need to be able to act. My friend will act on that crisis. He has shown it his career. Its with a great deal of pride that i have the privilege of nominating my friend, our chairman of the judiciary committee, but a person whose principles you know, whose actions you can trust, and in a time of crisis will respond with the leadership we need, jim jordan. [ applause ] good day. Im Andrea Mitchell in washington. The chaos is continuing, as you can see, on capitol hill. That was republican tom cole of Oklahoma NominatingJim Jordan For A second round. Pete aguilar is about to nominate Hakeem Jeffries. [ applause ] here we are again, mr. Speaker. And i promise to make these speeches shorter if we get closer to a compromise. But im not certain that thats going to happen at this moment. While the republican candidate for speaker is making latenight backroom deals to secure the gavel, Leader Jeffries has extended the hand of bipartisanship for a path forward. One thing was very clear yesterday, the vote total. 220 212 to 200. The peoples house has spoken. Leader jeffries has the support to be speaker that this country needs. [ applause ] mr. Speaker, 212200. No amount of election denying is going to take away from those vote totals. [ cheers and applause ] mr. Speaker pro tem, we shouldnt be surprised at the vote count. I noted yesterday the legislative acumen of the gentleman from ohio. Would it surprise anyone that in addition to not passing a single piece of legislation, he has never put a piece of legislation that has made it to a committee. The Speaker Of The House must be a legislator. The gentleman from ohio falls short in that regard. He supports an extreme agenda and is hell bent on banning abortion nationwide. Gutting medicare, getting Social Security gutting Social Security and giving cover to january 6 attackers. Those arent the values that we share. If we dont see a speaker elected in this round, there will be a Secret Ballot and the country cant afford more delays and more chaos. 15 days should be enough. Mrsz mrs. [ applause ] House Democrats are united on this path forward. We are united behind Hakeem Jeffries, united to put people over politics, United Statesed to united to build Safer Communities and defend democracy. Once again, we are coming together to achieve this common goal. That is to make Hakeem JeffriesSpeaker Of The House of representatives. [ applause ] almost, mr. Speaker pro tem. Hakeem jeffries has done what we havent seen from the other side of the aisle, and that is to keep a caucus united. When extreme maga republicans vowed to send our country into a devastating default, it was Leader Jeffries who led House Democrats to reject the extremism and keep the government open. [ applause ] mr. Speaker pro tem, we have the vote totals to back that up. It has been Leader Jeffries and House Democrats who have shown a willingness and conviction to keep our promise to deliver for american families. And it will be Hakeem Jeffries who will move our body and our country forward on a bipartisan path. Who on the other side of the aisle will take yes for an answer and work with us to achieve three common goals . My colleague and good friend, the gentleman from oklahoma, mentioned one of them. Supporting assistance to israel. What he left out was assistance to ukraine and our National Security objectives. [ applause ] second, above all else, we must commit to keep this government open and functioning. [ applause ] finally, we need to put this body on a bipartisan path to achieve real results for the american public. That is what we were sent to do. That is what we need to do. That is why Hakeem Jeffries is the leader we need at this time to lead this chamber. I would like to nominate Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker Of The House. I yield back. [ applause ] [ Chanting Hakeem ] no further nominations, the clerk will now call the roll. Adams. Jeffries. Atterholt. Jordan. Aguilar. Jeffries. Allford. Jordan. Alyn. Jordan. Allrag. Jeffries. We are now again after a second round, jim jordan has failed unless someone switches before the gavel comes down. The House Republican conference will have to figure out what to do next. Most likely scenario could be turning to the temporary speaker Patrick Mchenry of North Carolina and trying to empower him with democratic support, perhaps, to have enough support to become a temporary speaker and begin to bring legislation to the floor. Joining us now, Garrett Haake and steve kornacki. Garrett, first to you. 24 hours after we last spoke, this is a rewind of the same movie. Theres still no elected Speaker Of The House. The republicans still cannot agree on someone who can get 217 votes. Yeah, its a congressional groundhog day. I will let steve work through most of the math. The long and short of it is, jim jordan is in more or less the same position he was in yesterday. Perhaps slightly worse. He lost one vote who had supported him yesterday. Buchanan of florida. There could be more to come. His alies have said as much. He will lose additional folks, folks peeling off in their support. They are urging his backers to stay strong saying he is the only person who could unite the conference. We dont know that to be true. We dont know anybody could unite this conference. As you pointed out, the big moving part here today is this idea of perhaps acting on a resolution thats about to be put forward by dave joyce of ohio which would empower Patrick Mchenry to take on more of the powers of an actual Speaker Of The House for some to be determined shorter period. Democrats have suggested they might be on board with that. They are leaving the door open to it. Jim jordan suggested that he thinks it should get a vote. That may be a strategic choice to show that move doesnt have support or could only be supported by democrats. Nevertheless, we may see a vote on that today. I think where we are likely to head, according to my conversation with republican aides is they will end up in a republican only meeting in the basement of the capitol to try to continue to hash this out. I think we are seeing the dysfunction on full display where even aides and allies expect him to do worse and are unable to articulate what a path forward to gaining the votes necessary to make him speaker would be. Steve kornacki is standing by. Take us through the names. We hit five not willing to vote for jim jordan. In the last minute or so while we have been talking, where is the vote count . Two important things are here. This is the list of all the republicans who voted against jordan yesterday. The question is, is jordan making any inroads, flipping anybody . Six have voted. Six stayed against him. He flipped nobody. Here is the other key, how many new no votes are there, folks who voted for jordan yesterday who are now against him . That is up to two. Tioned buchanan from florida flipped. Just in the last minute, Drew Ferguson from georgia has also flipped. I think we are waiting we are about to come to Andrew Garberino who was another no vote yesterday. See if he continues to be. He is from long island. He voted for zeldon yesterday. He is voting right now. He voted for zeldon again. Right after him, not on your list, mike garcia from california. Who represents a heavily blue district. He stayed with jordan. Thats where we stand right now. Seven antijordan votes voted, they continue to be against jordan. Add two new ones. Lets bring in our panel, former Pennsylvania Republican congressman charlie dent and alenzia johnson. Charlie, first to you. What you saw happening on the floor, what does it mean for the Republican Party . Where do they go Behind Closed Doors when they begin to talk this through . They know this is a very embarrassing situation for them. Its clear jim jordan is not going to have the votes. They are going to move to empower Patrick Mchenry, who really doesnt want the job. But they will move to empower him and let him try to take this on. I think jordan doesnt have the good will among the conference. Congressman, if he doesnt have the will among the conference, will he continue, try to do what Kevin Mccarthy did successfully by the end, but he gave away so much power that it didnt work, and try to go through round after round and wear people down . He has been arm twisting for the last couple of days. I wouldnt be surprised if jim jordan tried to do it again. He will take another run at this. I suspect he will. At some point, dave joyce will make the motion to empower Patrick Mchenry. We will see. I think the conference they are long past exhausted with this. They want some closure. They see mchenry as the only viable path at this moment. Lets bring you into this. What does Hakeem Jeffries do . They have been signaling democrats are ready to work with someone they think is reasonable. What they said last night, several of them on our air, is that they want at least as a minimum that they would live agree to live with what Kevin Mccarthy originally agreed to, bipartisan house and senate, white house agreement on the budget, the spending levels, rather than renegotiating, relitigating it among eight House Republicans, forcing a potential government shutdown. Democrats dont want a leader who is an insurrectionist, who is bringing up impeachment against President Biden, the list of reasons jim jordan wont have support that he needs, on even his side. Democrats are very much having this conversation of, this is what your party has promised us and a way to Work Together to Push Forward The President s agenda and also most importantly ensure that the congress is working for the american people. If we think about what we are in the middle of, we cant get legislation done. We are in a very sad place. Its not only working for people in our country but the world is watching. Its holding up aid for so many of our allies. Democrats have made it very clear. Hakeem jeffries is our leader. If you want us to support someone on the republican side, they have to be willing to work with us in a bipartisan way and get rid of this ability for the gop to be beholden to extremists doing the bidding of donald trump. Steve, bring us up to date. Talk to me about those who were against jordan yesterday and are still against him and whether any others have gone against him and flipped. Yeah. So far we have had ten who voted against jordan yesterday. You see how they voted today. None have flipped over and voted for jordan. Granger, that was a surprise antijordan vote yesterday. Remains an antijordan vote. Don bacon from nebraska, ken buck on the conservative side continues to be dug in here. So far, there have been two new votes here, buchanan from florida, ferguson from georgia, both voted for jordan yesterday, have now voted against him. He is at 12. We are now getting close to the name i think we are about six away right now. We had nearly 190 members vote. The next antijordan vote from yesterday is john james from michigan. He had a meeting yesterday with jordan. He said they would get things worked a cryptic statement. He comes from a district that donald trump won but by only a few points, less than five points. He is coming up in two votes. This is one i think he voted for tom cole yesterday. If theres a chance here for jordan to be flipping, he is about to come up. Lets see how he votes. He continues to be you will see it here. John james choosing not to vote for jim jordan. You have 11 who have voted, more than half who voted no yesterday, not a single one has flipped. Next up is mike kelly from pennsylvania. Red district, very conservative. Kelly in the republican conference has floated the idea of giving Patrick Mchenry more expanded, elongated powers as Speaker Of The House. That potential movement we have been talking about. Kelly has been somebody who has been talking that up. Two new no votes so far. The other name to watch, we are aways away, omalfa from california suggested he will move over to jordan. Otherwise, when you look at this list, if he is the only one, its a net loss for them in terms of where they stood yesterday. We are only thats about the 200th vote. Hakeem jeffries voted for himself. Thats why they got up and cheered. There are still some opportunities potentially for jordan to lose more ground. You see where the number stands. 11 voted no yesterday, continuing. Two new no votes. Keep an eye on the others to come. Thanks, steve, for the update. Let me bring back garrett. Garrett, in watching this, what does jim jordan do . Does he fight another day, tie the conference up . Do they tell him and does he realize that its over and that they have to move on . Look, jim jordans reputation is based on being a fighter. Thats part of why the Republican Base is so enamored with him. I would be surprised to see him shrink away from a fight now. I think it would be a demoralizing moment for him and everyone in the hard right protrump faction of the house if he took two nos for an answer. The nos are getting louder and louder with more votes turning against him. I think thats why this Conference Meeting here coming up might be important. We will see whether jordans own ambitions and whether his views of his political talents here is outweighed by the views of others in the conference wanting to move to anybody who can get to 217. I think his Natural Inclination is to try to keep fighting. He and Steve Scalise are getting a live education in how difficult this kind of Coalition Building really is. Its the kind of Coalition Building that jim jordan as a Committee Chair and House Freedom caucus member and a Back Bench Bomb throwing before that has never had to engage in. Its like going up from Flag Football to the super bowl with nothing in between. They are seeing this play out in real time. Mike kelly of pennsylvania, by the way, just voted for former speaker boehner. Anybody can be nominated. You or i, garrett, could be nominated. I will not serve. I dont think you should either. Not in my playbook. Charlie dent, they could nominate you. They could. They could, indeed. Charlie, talk to us about what happens next. You think its going to be turning to Patrick Mchenry, the reluctant speaker . Yeah. Theres no wisdom to be gained by the second kick of the mule and certainly the third and fourth. When you see a former chief deputy whip, who doesnt vote against the party, he is voting against jordan. He has reasons. He must be angry like a lot are. Buchanan who has been a team player, he is voting against. Steve mentioned granger being a surprise. Im not surprised. I was going to say, to me the appropriators are the lions of the house. They are the cardinals to mix my metaphors. I was a cardinal. The appropriators are serious about doing the business of the house and not running the government into a shutdown. What jordan would do, he would try to blow up the appropriations bills. He is a thorn in their side. This is just they are returning fire. Thats what they are doing. Womack, all these appropriators, they are really upset, obviously. They are not going to be moved. Theres a Reason Boehner called him a legislative terrorist. We see why people dont want to support him. Thank you so much. Garrett, stand by and stay with us. You and steve kornacki. We have a lot of serious news to report elsewhere in the world. The tipping point, perhaps, a deadly attack on a hospital in Gaza Galvanizing Outrage across the arab world against israel, even as the idf, the military insists that its forces at least were not behind the blast. President biden trying to bridge the divide by speaking to both sides from tel aviv. You are a democracy. Like the United States, you dont live by the rules of terrorists. You live by the rule of law. When conflicts flare, you live by the law of wars. What sets us apart from the terrorists is we believe in the fundamental dignity of every human life. President biden also weighing in. Based on the information we have seen today, it appears the result of an errant rocket fired by a Terrorist Group in gaza. The president extending his condolences for the People Killed in the hospital attack. I grieve i truly grieve for the families who were killed or wounded by this tragedy. Earlier, he met with Prime Minister netanyahu and the war cabinet. Rage is erupting with thousands converging near the u. S. Embassy in beirut and the west bank and outside the embassy in jordan. Joining me now, monica alba. Talk to me about the intelligence assessment, where the president stands. He was heading in the motorcade towards air force 1 for what he thought was a balancing act, very delicate, going to israel, trying to get them to limit the civilian casualties in the upcoming ground war, get aid in, working on the hostage rescue. Then meeting with the arabs in a summit in jordan which got canceled as he was boarding air force 1. It shows you how daring this journey, this trip was. Because of the volatility, because of how fluid the situation was and because in real time they did have to adjust the president s schedule and make some of these changes on issues that were very important. High priority for the president that we know from his remarks today he has. He has been able to secure this assurance that there will be humanitarian aid that can flow into gaza through egypt. Thats something that was a big part and target of these conversations. That hospital explosion, of course, completely changed the dynamic of this trip as well. The president , when he got on air force 1, wasnt able to say definitively what the intelligence was pointing to yet. Essentially, by the time he landed in tel aviv and he spoke to reporters, he was able to say that because of data that was shown to him by his own u. S. Defense officials, that he did believe this assessment that it wasnt the cause of an israeli air strike but instead a Palestinian Islamist jihad fail injure in terms of a rocket that then was misguided and misfired and exploded there. They are still working on the information to determine how many casualties and Everything Else about what happened in the hours after that. All of that still amounted to a very consequential visit for this president who has lost so much personally in his life that he brought that to this journey and these remarks today, telling the people of israel that they are not alone and never will be as long as the United States is standing. Monica, thank you. Joining us now, raf sanchez from ashdod, israel, and richard haas, the Foreign Relations and author of the ten habits of good citizens. Raf, whats the latest on the attack against the hospital . The u. S. Saying that they believe that israel was not responsible. You heard just what the president said. Yeah. It has been 24 hours since the explosion at the hospital in gaza city. The fog of war lifting somewhat, it seems, over the course of the day, the Israeli Military has been providing what it says was evidence that it was not responsible for the strike. It says it was Palestinian Islamic jihad, one of the smaller Terror Groups that operate in gaza, that had one of its rockets go astray and crash into the courtyard in front of the hospital. The Israeli Military presenting two pieces of what they say are evidence. One, Drone Footage over the hospital where you do not see any sign of a crater in front of the hospital. The Israeli Military says the kind of heavy ordinance it is dropping from its Fighter Aircraft would leave a significant crater, would cause damage to surrounding buildings. You dont appear to see that in the Drone Footage. The Israeli Military releasing what it says is a conversation between two hamas officials who acknowledge that this was a palestinian rocket. We should say, this is all according to the Israeli Military. We at nbc news have not been able to independently verify those claims. Thank you so much, raf. Richard haas, joining us now from new york. Richard, one of President Bidens initial goals was to push for the release of the hostages. There were glimmers of hope negotiated, we have been reporting, through qatar. Now this is on hold. They still havent gotten the humanitarian aid in. I have been told they not only thought they could get aid in, at least coming out of the arab summit today, but also get a path for continuing to get aid in, limiting civilian casualties from the israeli side, and potentially some conversation about the future of leadership in gaza if they were to weeks, months from now, as israel hopes, eliminate the hamas. Questions of the hostages and aid are affected by the fact that theres a war going on. Its going to be extraordinarily difficult to get this sorted out. Thats the reality. My own view maybe a controversial one i think the idea of coming up with an alternative leadership in gaza, however desirable, is a pipe dream. I dont see the Palestinian Authority having the will or ability to step in. It can barely run the west bank. The arab governments are uninterested in playing a larger role. No u. N. Agency can. I think at the moment, as awful as hamas is, i think that they are a fact of life. The question is, can you get aid in to reach the people who need it . Can you perhaps bring about some type of exchange of hostages for prisoners . I think the real issue is going to be, how does israel carry out what it believes to be necessary Military Operations in the wake of october 7 at the same time theres going to be growing pressure for a ceasefire to get hostages out, to get food in, and because of the reaction to yesterdays incident at the hospital. Richard haas, thank you so much for your expertise on all of this. I want to bring in leon panetta, member of congress and white house chief of staff. President biden saying that the Defense Department data makes him confident israel was not behind the hospital blast. He expressed more confidence. What do you make of that . Well, its obviously important if we have intelligence and pentagon information that this was, in fact, a Jihad Missile gone astray. I think thats really important. We are probably continue to see incidents like this take place as the war heats up. But it is really important that the public know the facts. Hopefully, the indication here will send a clear message that right now a lot of very innocent palestinians are deeply at risk. At this point, is it risky for the u. S. President to be declarative about what happened, to be going to tel aviv, with the arab european allies concerned and protests, one Terrorist Incident in brussels, threats in france, how successful do you think the bottom line is, how successful do you think he could or should be in getting israel today during that war cabinet meeting, clearly this conversation took place, to limit the Ground Offensive and try to target their campaign and avoid civilian casualties as much as you can in urban warfare . I think its very important and its certainly part of the role of the United States as a world leader to try to express not just the support for israel but the support for humanitarian aid and trying to do everything necessary to provide medicine, food and shelter to those palestinians who are obviously going to be victims as a result of this war. I think President Biden is providing that voice. Theres not a lot of other voices out there right now that are talking about some kind of moral leadership at a time of serious warfare involving israel and hamas. I think he has got to be that voice. Im glad he went there. Im glad he indicated that the United States is going to continue to support israel. But he also indicated that it is very important that israel not just be consumed by anger, but that it exercise the kind of responsible approach that involves respect for International Law and the rules of war. Whats your level of concern about the clashes along the lebanon Israel Border . Hezbollah declared a day of rage today. The protests that have spread. The announcement that 2,000 u. S. Troops are deploying not for this engagement, but to the region. We have one on the way and another Carrier Battle Group in the eastern med. Andrea, this is a dangerous moment in this war. The United States obviously has deployed two Carrier Fleets to the mediterranean. Now its sending 2,000 marines and sailors to that part of the world. Which represents an important step towards trying to provide some meaningful support, hopefully, military support, but also other support at this point in time. Theres no question in my mind that right now hezbollah, lebanon, iran are basically sitting back to determine what happens as israel decides to move into gaza and how horrific its going to be in terms of its impact on civilian casualties. Is it going to be more measured . I think that will tell us a lot. If, in fact, its a fullscale invasion into gaza, i think theres a very good chance that this war is going to expand and that hezbollah will enter the war. Whether iran does or not they basically operate as always through proxies. They will probably continue to do that. But theres no question that right now, i think there is a real danger of escalation in this war because of those that play a part in determining whether or not there will be continuing warfare in that region. At that point, what is the engagement of the u. S. . What is the prospect of getting hostages out . We thought we had a chance at some progress yesterday. To be e to retrieve those hostages. I do think that israel has got to define what are the primary objectives here that they want to achieve. Its still not very clear. I think if, in fact, this is about undermining hamas by going after its leadership, destroying their command and control, then that ought to be clearly stated as the objectives and goals. And frankly, if that is the goal, then i think there are ways to be able to accomplish that that dont involve necessarily a wholesale invasion of gaza. We faced the same situation after 9 11, as to how we were going to go after the terrorists who attacked us, and the way we approached it was to define where the targets are, where the leadership was and to go after that leadership. I think israel ought to have the ability to do the same thing with regards to hamas. Leon panetta, as always, were really grateful and we appreciate you. Thank you. Thank you. And back with Me Today Is Jason Stra Suh owe from the International Committee of the red cross. The horrors of what happened to the hospital in gaza, unspeakable. And we know the conflicting claims of responsibility, but the bottom line is not only did hundreds of people get killed and or injured including children, but now the aid is not getting in for another day, the food, the water, the fuel. What about the people you know in there . We know that unfortunately and youre describing the situation accurately the suffering is increasing every day. We see streams of people walking south, and then the question is where do they go . We know people are sleeping outside. We know that theyre desperate for food, and theyre desperate for water. When you have Hundreds Of Thousands of people moving, theres not the infrastructure there to be able to provide a place to sleep, to be able to provide medical care, and to be able to provide food and water. So were looking at an increasingly desperate situation, and were going to see that every day this continues. And now you cant get your people out, the u. N. Workers and other aid workers who are stuck also at the rafah crossing. They cant get out, the aid cant get in. We have 60 tons of aid supplies, including medical supplies waiting to go in. We have a Surgical Team also very eager to get across the border and to be able to start helping those in need. So were just waiting or hoping that theres an opening and that that aid and those personnel can move in. Were concentrating on the people that we want to get in more so than the people that we want to get out, in fact. Jason, our thoughts are with you and all of your valiant people from the International Red cross. Thank you. And going back to washington and the action on the house floor, congressman jim jordan appears to have lost the second round of votes for speaker as the vote continues on the floor, they can always change their votes before the gavel comes down, but now it is too many to even contemplate that. Back with us is nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent Garrett Haake and msnbc political correspondent, steve kornacki. We are almost done with the roll call. Theyre going to come back around and call on the folks who hadnt voted originally. Basically yesterday there were 20 no votes on the republican side for jim jordan. These are all of them. You can see here just about all of them continued to vote against him. The only republican to flip to jordans side, Doug La Mall Fa from california. He was antijordan yesterday. He voted for jordan in the roll call today. Also, we are still waiting as they come around to the half a dozen or so members who didnt answer, Victoria Sparts of indiana, she usually waits until the very end. Shes been indicating maybe present maybe for somebody else and most significantly, how many people voted for jim jordan yesterday voted against him today, four, Drew Ferguson from georgia, a new no vote. Marion net miller meeks from iowa, she voted for jordan yesterday, she voted for kay granger today and Pete Stauberg from duluth, minnesota, he voted for bruce westerman, congressman from arkansas. Those are four folks who voted for jordan yesterday who flipped. So theres the potential here depending on how sparks votes that 19 of the 20 who voted no yesterday will still be noes, and there will be four new noes added onto that. That will be potentially depending on how sparts goes, 23 no votes from republicans on jim jordan. What does that do to his chances, garrett . I think i know the answer, but the mood of the house . Look, i mean, steves the math guy here, but that doesnt help, right . Hes moving in the wrong direction. His allies had said going into this that they thought this would happen, that he would lose votes and some of these people were people we knew were soft on jordan to begin with, frajly we were watching yesterday for the possibility they might vote no. They had lit up jim jordan in one of these private republican Conference Meetings but ultimately voted for him to see if they could kind of get there and get over the hump. Thing is going to create more consternation whether jordan has what it takes to start winning these people over. I think the sort of two most obstinate block of votes that hes going to have the biggest problem with, maybe the new yorkers who seem to be very dug in in opposition to him, and those old appropriaors who do not want to see the House Go Down this path, andrea. And steve kornacki, what did sparks do . She surprised everyone, which shes done a number of times since january. She ended up voting for jim jordan. So Victoria Sparts from indiana who had voted against jordan yesterday, she becomes the second antijordan vote who flipped. Doug llama fa, california, Victoria Sparts from indiana, both yeses on jordan. The other 18 who were noes yesterday continue to be knows. And we mentioned those four other new no votes. It means jordan had a net loss from the first vote to this new vote, he had a net loss of two votes. There were 20 against him yesterday in the first ballot, it will be 22 against him on this second ballot. Well, garrett, im no mathematician, but that means youre going in the wrong direction. So Patrick Mchenry, still going to be pressure on him, pressure on the democrats to join if Patrick Mchenry is put forward as an extended, temporary, but empowered speaker. Yeah, look, i think the pressure is still on the republican side here. I mean, democrats have made it very clear theyre sort of waiting with open hand, but republicans have to extend the hand first, right . Like democrats cant offer to interrupt this republican process here. That would only doom mchenry or anybody else to failure, i think. This has to be the kind of thing that republicans realizing they have no other option come the democrats. At least thats the democratic viewpoint on it, whether theyre at that point now or whether they need to dig a little bit deeper to see if there is, you know, more concrete beneath rock bottom remains to be seen, and i think thats something thats going to get hashed out Behind Closed Doors in another Conference Meeting thats liable to begin as soon as the gavel falls here. Republicans understand theyve got to get their act together and not immediately turn around to another vote. It seems to me the republicans have not learned a lesson that nancy pelosi learned many years ago. You dont go to the floor if you dont have the votes. I think thats partially right, andrea, although this is a very different scenario in that youre not voting on legislation. Youre voting on an individual. I think for the jordan folks, they truly believed they could put pressure on some of these members once they found out who they were. I mean, up until now, until yesterday, all the ballots on this had been Secret Ballots. They didnt even know who their opposition was, and they needed to smoke that out. I think that was the thinking here, but its clearly back fired. Every attempt at publicly pressuring these members has only strengthened their resolve to oppose jim jordan. The private conversations seem to have gone a little better but not much. Well, as you were pointing out earlier, hes known as a brawler. That was his Great Attraction to the conservatives, steve kornacki, weigh in for the last few seconds, being a brawler is not that appealing to apparently the majority of the conference. Especially we have been talking about its not just the number of no votes that jordans getting here. Theyre coming from different pockets of the conference for different reasons. We keep mentioning the first no vote in every ballot against him has been don bacon from nebraska, quintessential moderate blue district republican. Politically its in somebody like bacons interest here to be seen opposing jim jordan. Democrats are itching for a republican to vote for bacon. Anthony desposito, his District Voted for joe biden by 14 points in the 2020 president ial election. He sees it as a dangerous vote politically. Then youve got more of the institutionalists, kay granger, she continues to be a holdout here. Mario diazbalart from florida, he continues to be a holdout. From this list of 18 who vote Nod Yesterday and voted no today, and this new list of four who are added on, are there five who are committed to just not voting for jim jordan . Because if the answer to that is yes, hell never get the votes. I think thats going to have to be the last word, Garrett Haake, steve kornacki, thank you both so much. That does it for this edition of Andrea Mitchell
