david scott. effries. so here s the thing you can see the tally chart on the right-hand side. we are making sure everybody has voted. we believe the magic number is 217. as you see right there kevin mccarthy has 216. when they start another roll call we will go back to that immediately but in the meantime let s bring in our chief congressional correspondent chad pergram chad do we appear to be one vote short. that s right. this is why it always takes a while at the end because you have the tellers, the tally clerks in front of the chamber they are going through manually and comparing notes and making sure that everybody has the same numbers. let me do a deep dive right now. so this is where we stand. okay. so remember that the speaker must win an outright majority of all members casting ballots for somebody by their last name. okay? so the present votes do not count. the present votes do not count. so if you laura: chad can we pause? because i think we have matt g
threat to marriage equality. i m jonathan capehart, this is the sunday show. tomorrow is a big day for memory democracy. for tomorrow, on the final day of its term, the supreme court will issue its long awaited decision on donald trump s claim on presidential immunity in his federal election interference case. the ruling could determine if trump will ever face accountability for his role in the violent insurrection at the u.s. capitol on january 6th, 2021. but no matter wha( the justices decide, the court s decision to delay this case until now has all but guaranteed that trump will not have to stand trial before the november election and this decision will drop after a weekend which biden has growing calls for him to bow out after his shaky debate performance on thursday. right now he is with his family at camp david, a trip planned before the debate but a trip where the debate and the panic will come up. the board correctly says any decision to drop out of the race should
or is there going to be more discussion on mike johnson s team to say this is what going forward looks like for us. i think that conversation is inevitable. because tomorrow i think we will pass all these bills with a super majority. that s a whole other conversation. imagine a majoritarian body and when the vote happens on ukraine and israel you have a massive support. but to your question, yes. there s very little doubt in my mind that after these things pass, green or gosart or one of those guys is going to call for a motion to vacate. we won t have to deal with it tomorrow we ll deal with it when we come back. but yeah that s the moment when we say. when presumably speaker johnson goes to jeffries and says, look who knows if i m going to keep my job. let s talk about what democrats can do to keep my job. and you labeled what it would
be. it would be a coalition government which by the way would be appalling to a lot of members of the majority. but guess what, you had a majority and you screwed it up. i think there s a conversation to be had there. obviously it ll be had with jeffries. i m a pragnatist. if that means we get more done, that is something we should consider. thank you for your time. congressman jim himes of connecticut. thank you, sir. we have lots ahead this evening including the apparent double standard universities are applying to protests and thought. first iran is responding to israel s strike on the country overnight by denying that a strike happened at all. what that down playing means for raised fears of a wider war in the region, that s next.
laura: okay. ken buck and gaetz, i believe if i heard it right, both voted for mccarthy. sam, am i right there? gaetz voted present. all right. trace gallagher. it s hard to hear i have a lot of people in my ear. trace gallagher takes it from here with the latest coverage and we re going to keep it going. we ll see what happens. good evening, everyone, and welcome to america s late news. we are watching right now the vote tabulation. if you missed it matt gaetz just voted present, that is two present, four for others and it now comes down to these remaining votes. let s listen in very quickly. carter of california. jeffries.
