BSNL that also operates Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) networks in two metropolitans - Delhi and Mumbai, had issued equipment purchase order (PO) to Tata Consultancy Service (TCS), a part of India s diversified conglomerate Tata group in June last year.
Speaking at Driving India s Techade: D2M for Bharat - 5G Broadcast Summit , BSNL chairman and managing director Pravin Kumar Purvar said even direct-to-mobile (D2M) broadcasting, which transmits multimedia content to consumers smartphones without requiring an active internet connection using a technology that is employed for issuing emergency alerts and assisting in disaster management - too would require towers.
Bsnl: Purvar said the telecom and the D2M business are dependent on the pricing of the spectrum - whether signal-carrying airwaves should be charged or should be priced at a non-price cost.
“I see this sector as a sunrise sector. There are new technologies, new investments. Close to Rs 2 lakh crore investment is happening in the 5G rollout. BSNL is reviving in a very systematic and methodical way,” Vaishnaw said, as per the report.
