you cannot sit up here in 2019 and make an argument that it would have been okay with you to leave little girls like kamala harris at the tender mercies of local law enforcement, local school boards because it was 20, almost 30 years after brown vs. the board of education and schools still were not desegregated. i m a ninth generation american, i m a first person in my family born with all my rights recognized by this government. had we been waiting interest these local sheriffs to do right by us, we still be in the situation my parents were born into. so he had the opportunity to be joe biden last night, to show the empathy, to show the growth, to thank kamala harris for what she s done, thank her family. he missed the empathy moment, the civil rights moment. he missed the moment, and i think the air is going to come out of the tires for him not because of any one thing but the totality of this performance
responsible and who s not. and for me i think that that second point is very important to mcconnell in particular who in this term in congress has confirmed more than a few judges to the bench who will not affirm the significance of brown vs. board of education. which is fascinating. this is an interesting point. most humans watching this would say that brown vs. board of education is settled law that we are not into segregation of our schools. and we have judges being confirmed who will not say that went out. and they won t say that. and what s significant about that is that brown vs. board of education. the reason i mentioned plecy by accident, overturns the jim crow segregation and all of its economic political social educational terrors that plethy versus ferguson has substantiated. but to then confirm judges who would take us back to this past
dawning. reporter: a year after the montgomery bus boycott, little rock became the stage for the next drama of the movement when local naacp leaders hand-picked nine black students and pressured the school board to enroll them at all white central high school. they were challenging the city to comply with the supreme court s 1954 decision in brown vs. board of education where the court ruled that all public schools must be integrated. ernest green, age 16, 12th grade. when they said, are you interested in transferring to central, i said, hey, why not? my attitude was that change was coming, i want to be a part of it. i m ready to change the face of the south. reporter: the story took an unexpected turn when the governor defied the courts and ordered the national guard to block the black students from entering the school.
done. yes we need to ensure we stop visiting these injustices on future generations. the legacy of slavery. and, yes, we must immediately address income and economic inequality. health care disparities and lack of educational access and the fact we have segregation today in america and our schools that is in some ways every bit as bad as america before brown vs. board of education in 1954 but, ultimately, that conversation must lead us to a true reckoning and the repair at the root of the word reparations. i would sign into law house bill 40 offered by sheila jackson lee of houston, texas, which formally begins that national conversation in our nation s capital. and then make sure that the people of this country engage in that conversation and lead us to the specific actions that will allow us to again be able to repair that damage done and ensure we stop visiting it on future generations.
this is attempting to take a step out on education which of course is a key, key policy issue for democratic primary voters across the country and especially here in south carolina. and as we hear sanders talking right now, the special focus on how this impacts the african-american community and especially on the 60th anniversary weekend of the brown vs. board of education decision. key day here for sanders. victor and cristi. where s he end up next? at that event he s going to talk about water quality issues in that particular area which has had a serious issue with that. he s talking about a lot of different issues across the tour of the south. of course he s going to end in alabama, victor, which of course is at the center of this big controversy regarding abortion. so sanders hitting on a number of important issues during the democratic primary.
