Winning the Central Missouri Activities Conference was a goal heading into the season for the Jefferson City Jays. Tuesday night, the Jays took a major step in that direction with a 68-47 victory at Fleming Fieldhouse against the Hickman Kewpies.
When Jefferson City coach Josh Buffington called a timeout with 4:52 remaining in Thursday night’s game against Lutheran: St. Charles, it was simply to serve as a reset break for his team before getting into the closing minutes. That 30-second break in the action turned out to be a deciding momentum shift. The Jays led by three points at the timeout. They then scored on each of their next four possessions, part of a 9-0 run that lifted them to a 72-60 victory against the Cougars at Fleming Fieldhouse.
The eighth-seeded Jefferson City Jays took the top-seeded Camdenton Lakers down to the wire on Monday in the first round of the Class 5 District 5 Tournament, but fell 3-1 to the Lakers to end their season. The Lakers were only able to muster two baserunners through the first five innings against Jordan Martin on the mound, but they capitalized on a couple of key mistakes in the bottom of the sixth inning to score three runs to take the lead.
Helias coach Chris Wyrick picked up win No. 400 in his coaching career with a thrilling 4-3 win against crosstown rival Jefferson City to claim the Jays Baseball Classic title Saturday at Vivion Field.
