Helias coach Chris Wyrick picked up win No. 400 in his coaching career with a thrilling 4-3 win against crosstown rival Jefferson City to claim the Jays Baseball Classic title Saturday at Vivion Field.
Just making it to Saturday night meant everything to Isaac Enloe. Last year, the Jefferson City senior was the lone Jay qualifier not to medal at the Class 3 state tournament. This year, he was the best finisher on his team.
Isaac Enloe of Jefferson City advanced to the Class 3 state title match at 285 pound with a semifinal victory Friday night at Mizzou Arena. Enloe defeated Jayce Hitt of McDonald County 3-0 in the semifinals. Enloe scored a takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead, then got an escape in the second to make it 3-0.
The Jefferson City Jays advanced nine wrestlers out of the first day of the Class 3 state wrestling championships at Mizzou Arena. Jefferson City is fourth in the team standings after Thursday night’s action with 27 points. Hillsboro is first with 34, followed by Whitfield with 32 and Neosho with 31.5.
The Jefferson City Jays have the numbers. The Jays will send 11 qualifiers to the mat today in the Class 3 wrestling championships at Mizzou Arena. That total should give Jefferson City a shot at winning its second straight state trophy after tying for third in Class 4 last season.
