Vail Valley s continued water supplies will need planning, conservation

Special to the Daily Keeping water flowing to customers is job one for the Eagle River Water & Sanitation District. It’s going to require planning and conservation to meet that goal in coming years. District general manager Linn Brooks recently presented an overview of the district’s master plan for the coming years. The plan includes a number of steps and will require the help of the district’s customers to conserve water. The biggest conservation goal requires cutbacks in the amount of water used for outdoor irrigation. The district has five billing tiers, with tiers 4 and 5 reflecting the most water use. Brooks said the district’s goal is to eliminate use in those top billing tiers.

Putting up temporary structures for outside sheltered dining has been a boon for smaller restaurants in town. Perhaps the biggest change to last summer’s rules is “common consumption areas.” Those areas allow people to wander around with an adult beverage in hand. Business owners and guests have given glowing reviews to that change. The change was enabled by an executive order from Gov. Jared Polis.

Vail outdoor recreation seeing big increases

Vail Recreation District special to the Vail Daily This isn’t much of a surprise: People in the last year have gone all-in on outdoor recreation. The latest data from the Vail Recreation District shows big jumps in use, and revenue, from the district’s golf, tennis and pickleball operations. Indoor activities, primarily at Dobson Ice Arena, have shown significant declines. Vail Recreation District Director Mike Ortiz went over those numbers during Tuesday’s meeting between the district’s board and the Vail Town Council. While the Vail Golf Club is still weeks from opening, Ortiz said golf pass sales are brisk this year, as they were last season.

Vail drops its outdoor face mask mandate

Scott N. Miller/smiller@vaildaily.com The Vail Town Council on Tuesday repealed the requirement to wear facial coverings outdoors in the town’s resort villages. Responding to changes in the COVID-19 pandemic, the town stopped enforcement April 19 of its outdoor mask mandate, first passed in November 2020. Full repeal had to wait until the April 20 meeting. The original outdoor mandate was passed in an effort to maintain a semblance of a full ski season. At the time, town and Vail Resorts officials were looking for consistency in requirements for guests heading from the town’s main parking structures to the gondolas in Vail Village and Lionshead.
