CHICAGO – Last Monday night should have been Rose Haddad’s annual dinner next to the giant Christmas tree inside the Walnut Room, a tradition she’s upheld for more than 80 years. Haddad, 92, used to visit the elegant confines with her mom when she was a girl. (“We didn’t have dinner most of the time,” she told me. “Just visited the tree.”) And when she was an adult, living in a two-flat in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, she introduced the upstairs neighbor children to her beloved tradition.
