Guy Parmelin took over as Swiss President on January 1, marking a new chapter for the country that coincides with the UK s Brexit deal being implemented. Brexit has provided a huge shock to the EU over the last four years, causing fears in the bloc that other member states could follow suit and leave. Eurosceptic parties across Europe have risen in prominence, looking to gain power in some of the EU s major member states. This is noticeable in France, where President Emmanuel Macron looks set to once again take on right wing nationalist Marine Le Pen in 2022.

Despite the emergence of the rejoin campaign, a Remain MP has declared the UK is now in the delivery phase of Brexit. Although declaring himself a “diehard” Remainer, Stephen Farry, MP for North Down in Northern Ireland’s Alliance Party, said the UK must make Brexit work now. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Farry said: “As someone who was a diehard Remainer, we’re now in the delivery phase of Brexit.”

Ben Habib claimed Boris Johnson s Brexit deal is not sovereign-compliant and that the UK is still joined at the hip to Brussels. Speaking to Martin Daubney on Brexit Unlocked, the former MEP went to warn that it is very easy to rejoin or have an associated membership with the EU in the future if a Government chooses to do that.

The state of the UK-US trade negotiations is in the spotlight ahead of Mr Biden s inauguration. The US accounted for 15 percent of the UK’s trade in 2018 but as of yet, the two sides have yet to agree a trade deal now Britain has left the EU. While a trade deal is vital for Mr Johnson’s post-Brexit plans, Scott Lucas, professor of International Politics at Birmingham University, told Express.co.uk, a trade deal will not come until 2022 at the earliest.
