Outlook? how does that happen? we re grown developed fully baked beings and set someone not just on a course that s neutral, if you live in a world of hate, neutral isn t a great place to be after that. i was 14 years old when i was recruited in 1987. i was out after eight years in 1996 when i was 23 years old and it was really the compassion that people showed me, people that i least deserved it from. people who were african american, jewish, gay, who saw in me something else. they weren t interested in pushing me away for murder and wanted to explore me under the armor. it was compassion at a time i least deserved really was the most powerful thing. for somebody like jeff scoop who has been in this movement since he was 14 years old and in his 45s now, he s never held a job outside of the movement and had interactions with other people outside of comrades he had.

How did you sense that was possible? language do you use to say aren t you tired of it and i can help you with this. you know, most people would be surprised to know i m listening. i don t debate. i don t tell them i m wrong. that pushes them further away. i did listening to potholes, the things that happened in his life that 14 years old detoured him down the path like i had been detoured at 14 years old and i started to fill the potholes in trying to build resilience and showed him compassion when he s a man who wasn t getting a lot of compassion from anybody rightfully so, he didn t deserve it for the hate that he was putting out into the world but i used that as an opportunity to pour out his soul to me. there was a broken child inside that 45-year-old body. what does change look like to somebody like that? if you re 45 years old, how old were you when you changed your
Me and followed for a long time as i ve been researching this movement and over the last couple years, i ve seen some cracks in his armor so to speak. i seen hesitation. i did something i typically don t do, i went after him and established a good rapport to him and listened to him and how tired he was of the hate and also how sorry he was for some of the things that he s been seeing happening lately so i really just listened to him and tried to be an ear for him because in that movement, there is not a lot you can be honest about. it s about putting up a show of force. for the first time in his life, he had somebody listen to vulnerabilities. that doesn t mean he doesn t have a long road to go. he has a lot of work in front of him. hate sounds active. being tired of hate with vulnerabilities inside your hate seems unusual. what does that look like to you?
