There were tearful reunions and ‘tales of bravery and gaiety’ as crowds of relatives, friends and well-wishers greeted the crew of the battle-scarred fighting ship, HMAS Sydney.

Cheers and coo-ees rang across the Harbour yesterday when Sydney welcomed home again the famous fighting ship that bears her name.

Police have shut down multiple parties across the city, including one on a sandbar in Sydneyâs south where about 100 people were gathered.
At 3pm, police from Sutherland Shire Police Area command attended Lilli Pilli Point following reports of about 100 people gathering on the sandbar. The crowd dispersed as police arrived.
Several people were treated by paramedics for intoxication. There were no arrests made.

The £19m P&O-Orient liner Oriana (42,000 tons) sailed into Sydney Harbour on its maiden voyage at 6 a.m. yesterday to the biggest welcome since the Queen s visit in 1954.
The master of the Oriana, Captain C. Edgecombe, said he had never seen such a welcome for a ship in his 38 years at sea.
