In a girls only matchup that was a rematch from last week, Winfield-Mt. Union managed a season sweep over Highland by having little trouble in a 59-20 Southeast Iowa Super Conference victory.
The Wolves hurried out to a 21-8 advantage after one, 40-15 at the break, and the defense only gave up five points in the second half to put the hammer down in a 39-point win. Jami Wilkerson hit seven of 10 shots for WMU to finish with a game-high 15 points and six steals. Bradie Buffington tallied 12 points and Farrah Nelson was also in double figures with 10. Jessica Kraus and Sarah Burton each had six points for Highland.
It was a Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader in Riverside on Friday with Highland and Winfield-Mt. Union splitting the area matchups.
The WMU girls continued to roll in a 67-28 victory. They jumped out to a 17-7 lead after one and 39-14 advantage at the break to put the game to rest. Keetyn Townsley hit three triples on her way to a game-high 19 points and Bradie Buffington added 11. The Huskies had a hard time taking care of the rock finishing with 34 turnovers. Jenna Sands recorded 13 points and Abbi Stransky brought in 11 boards. WMU is still perfect at 13-0 and Highland is 1-7.
Wapello and Winfield-Mt. Union met up on Friday for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader and the two schools managed a split.
The WMU girls kept their unblemished record intact with a 37-22 victory. The defensive battle was 14-12 at the break in favor of the Wolves and they started to get some cushion in the second half with a 23-16 advantage after three and outscoring the Arrows 14-6 in the fourth to seal the win. Wapello (2-4) shot just 19% from the floor and the Wolves out rebounded them 43-24. Bradie Buffington came off the bench to record 12 points and 12 rebounds while Farrah Nelson added 10 boards.
The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves girls basketball team is drawing attention from around the state with their hot start to the season. WMU is currently 8-0 on the year and ranked in this week’s poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Wolves check in at No. 11 in class 1A. They were ranked 14
th a week ago. Winfield-Mt. Union has wins this season over New London, WACO, Pekin, Danville, Van Buren, Central Lee, Mediapolis and Wapello. Kyndal Townsley and Bradie Buffington are the team leaders at 10 points per game. Buffington is the leader on the glass at eight boards per contest. Keely Malone has dished out a team best 2.3 assists. The Wolves are back on the floor one final time before Christmas when they meet Louisa-Muscatine in Winfield on Tuesday.
