Wolves and Warriors Named IGCA Academic All-State

Not only has several KCII area athletes been recognized for their work on the basketball court this winter, but also in the classroom. Seven area girls basketball players were recently named to the Academic All-State team released by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.  Five seniors from Winfield-Mt. Union that contributed to an 18-1 season were named to the list in Jenna Buffington, Kyndal Townsley, Jami Wilkerson, Madie Anderson, and Farrah Nelson. A pair of WACO players were recognized for their academic efforts in Morgan Graber and Lindsey Roth. To be eligible for the award, seniors must have posted a 3.85 or higher grade point average.

Division Champs WMU Dominate SEISC All-Conference Selections

With a league title and an undefeated regular season on the resume, you know plenty of postseason accolades will follow and that was the case for the Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team with six players named to all conference teams.   The North Division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference had nine first team players and four of them were Wolves including Bradie Buffington, Farrah Nelson, Kyndal Townsley, and Jobey Malone. Sharing the rock was no problem for WMU with seven players recording at least five points a game, but no one averaged double figures. Buffington led the group with 8.6 points a night, hauled in 4.8 rebounds, and her 1.5 blocks a game ranked third in the division. Nelson brought in a team best 7.6 boards and chipped in with 8.5 points. Townsley averaged 7.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and dished out 2.4 assists a contest while Malone added 6.4 points and 4.6 boards. 

Wolves Wallop Lions in Girls Matchup

In a girls only matchup that was a rematch from last week, Winfield-Mt. Union managed a season sweep over Highland by having little trouble in a 59-20 Southeast Iowa Super Conference victory. The Wolves hurried out to a 21-8 advantage after one, 40-15 at the break, and the defense only gave up five points in the second half to put the hammer down in a 39-point win. Jami Wilkerson hit seven of 10 shots for WMU to finish with a game-high 15 points and six steals. Bradie Buffington tallied 12 points and Farrah Nelson was also in double figures with 10. Jessica Kraus and Sarah Burton each had six points for Highland.
