Wolves and Warriors Named IGCA Academic All-State

Not only has several KCII area athletes been recognized for their work on the basketball court this winter, but also in the classroom. Seven area girls basketball players were recently named to the Academic All-State team released by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.  Five seniors from Winfield-Mt. Union that contributed to an 18-1 season were named to the list in Jenna Buffington, Kyndal Townsley, Jami Wilkerson, Madie Anderson, and Farrah Nelson. A pair of WACO players were recognized for their academic efforts in Morgan Graber and Lindsey Roth. To be eligible for the award, seniors must have posted a 3.85 or higher grade point average.

Division Champs WMU Dominate SEISC All-Conference Selections

With a league title and an undefeated regular season on the resume, you know plenty of postseason accolades will follow and that was the case for the Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team with six players named to all conference teams.   The North Division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference had nine first team players and four of them were Wolves including Bradie Buffington, Farrah Nelson, Kyndal Townsley, and Jobey Malone. Sharing the rock was no problem for WMU with seven players recording at least five points a game, but no one averaged double figures. Buffington led the group with 8.6 points a night, hauled in 4.8 rebounds, and her 1.5 blocks a game ranked third in the division. Nelson brought in a team best 7.6 boards and chipped in with 8.5 points. Townsley averaged 7.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and dished out 2.4 assists a contest while Malone added 6.4 points and 4.6 boards. 

Wolves and Nikes Meet in Top Ten Semifinal

It’s a highly anticipated playoff matchup tonight in Winfield when the Lady Wolves of Winfield-Mt. Union entertain the Burlington Notre Dame Nikes in the regional semifinal round of the class 1A tournament. WMU comes into the contest with a perfect record of 18-0 after a 55-31 win over Calamus-Wheatland in the quarterfinals. The Superconference North Champion Wolves were led by 14 points from Bradie Buffington. WMU is ranked No. 9 in the final class 1A poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. On the season they are led by Buffington’s nine points per game. Farrah Nelson has a team best eight boards per contest. Kyndal Townsley leads the Wolves with three assists and two steals per night.
