(File photo) In a world-first, a blind man in France has had his sight partly restored following pioneering treatment. The 58-year-old man, from Brittany in northern France, has a degenerative eye disease known as retinitis pigmentosa (RP), which affects the retina and can lead to complete blindness. He lost his sight after being diagnosed with the disease about 40 years ago. But a new groundbreaking treatment involving a type of therapy called optogenetics, has changed that.

Blind Man Can Partially See Again after 40 Years Thanks to Hungarian Researcher Roska A blind 58-year-old man has partially regained his vision thanks to the scientific breakthrough of Hungarian biomedical researcher Botond Roska. Roska and his research team have shown that optogenetic therapy can help individuals with retinitis pigmentosa partially regain their sight. This is a big step for gene therapy and could lead to technology that restores vision. Nature Medicine reported on the findings of an international research team led by José-Alain Sahel and Botond Roska which included members from Institut de la Vision and Hôpital National des Quinze-Vingts, Paris, the University of Pittsburgh, the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB), StreetLab, and GenSight Biologics.

A blind man has had his vision partially restored using optogenetic therapy and engineered goggles the first successful case of such therapy in humans. Researchers treated a 58-year-old man who for 40 years had been suffering from retinitis pigmentosa a neurodegenerative eye disease where loss of photoreceptors can lead to complete blindness.
