this was a sophisticated device. you see the circuit board and detonator in the left-hand of the bomber and bomb making materials. some we have spoken to says there is a disconnect with the weapon and the bomber himself. authorities now really want to make sure who made that bomb. was it made here in the uk? was it made in libya potentially? was bombmaker libyan? was the bombmaker british? they are trying to drill down on these questions. at the end of the day, this was a sophisticated device that killed 22 people. nobody here in the uk wants to see that happen again. alisyn. clarissa, thank you for that background. with british officials furious about the leaks in the investigation. what is the potential political and security fallout? that s next.
somewhat sophisticated end of the scale in terms of the images and analysis released by the new york times, and abedi was basically flunking out of university, had no technical chemistry background. it seems elite to think that he could have built something like this. it s not completely impossible, though, because he could have got some training while over in libya at some point, but i think the signs are pointing more towards a bombmaker separate from him still at large. lastly on these leaks, uk authorities are clearly frustrated, in their words, irritated about the leaks. on the united states side, how do they impact the investigation, and who are they alleging is behind these leaks? well, the british are clearly pointing fingers at the americans but the american intel community, the fbi, the cia, the administration? who exactly? and how does it impact the
rudd. she said the leaks need to stop and they were irritating. they have been coming out consistently from u.s. officials since the terror attack took place. there is a recognition that the u.s. has a rather large national intelligence bureaucracy. maybe it is lower level officials disseminating the information. the thing that has caused concern and anger and frustration is the decision to public the photographs in the new york times that appear to show the bomb that was used in the attack from the looks of those pictures it does seem that the bomb was certainly quite powerful. potentially sophisticated. that has authorities here concerned that there is a bombmaker potentially still at large. they don t know if he would be here or in libya. these are the questions they are trying to drill down on and they
long way right now. muhammad, thanks. a lot of updates throughout the hour and we ll bring them to you. cnn terrorism analyst paul cruickshank joining me now. paul, you have this detail that they now believe that this very likely or very clearly, a network, part of a network. i know that probably does not come as a surprise to you, but what does it mean they picked up? well, it means that they believe this could have been a conspiracy. there were others potentially involved. there could be a bombmaker still out there and the police aren t drawn on that and they ve been furiously investigating this over the last day or so, and what they ve discovered has made them more and more and more certain that there was a network behind this attack and that clearly, there are some people now in custody, but the concern will be that there are others still out there who could pose a threat, who can move forward
is this the bombmaker? he delivered the parcel. it was on his back, and the other question is, did he know it was there? you have to know these things. did he detonate it with a switch? was he told to carry the parcel and someone else could have detonated it. all these questions are there. but in that apartment where he lives, is there bombmaking material or is it clean? was it made at another place or made by another actor? those are key questions for the uk police tonight. jim cavanaugh, just one of our experts, the voice of three decades plus experience in a gruesome field, but one where we have to hope all peace loving people tonight have to hope that science is on our side and we ll find out who did this and why. thanks to all of our family of contributors, reporters. our coverage will continue at the top of the hour.
