is a great deal we can learn about these terror groups from those bombs. and with me now, counterterrorism analyst jim marcadis, and nbc news terrorism analyst evan kohlmann. good to see you. of the bombs used in paris, we are told they are sophisticated, showed quite a level of expertise. what can you tell us about them and what can we learn from them? well, we re called triaphitone triaperoxide. it s quite simple. you can buy the ingredients in a grocery store or a pharmacy, where the value really is, is in the preparation. this is an extremely technical preparation. you can do it in a basement. you can do it, you know, in a bathtub. but it takes a very experienced bombmaker because this is a very powerful air base, so it
this is a good way of building a powerful explosive device. and jim, what do we think might be happening now, because one of the things that i have read is that a bombmaker, somebody who is sophisticated, who as evan says, can build something that is very reliable, is a valuable commodity, indeed. so, for any terrorist organization, that would be somebody who they would want to protect, that they have a lot of recruits who are willing to die for the cause, a sophisticated bombmaker is another thing altogether. do we think he s gone back to syria, he s gone far under ground? how tough will it be to find whoever did this? well, we know that the french have passed a law declaring a state of emergency for an additional three months. border checks are going to be up all around europe. you re absolutely right, he is an extremely valuable commodity. we ve seen in the last few days that the french and belgians and other police forces around europe have conducted hundreds
detonates on impact as opposed to with flame or heat, but it s very, very unstable. and so, while the bombs are being prepared, quite often you have accidents in there. there are stories all over the place of terrorist groups that have blown themselves up in their own apartments because they ve not been careful in the preparation. so, what is the sophistication level, evan, tell us about this bombmaker? and we often hear about a signature from a bomb-maker. originally there was word that mohammed k. was probably the bombmaker, now they re saying not. how hard will it be to track down who would have done this? look, acetone is nail polish remover. so, trying to find everybody that bought nail polish remover is not always the easiest task in the universe. i think the real issue here is that not only is it extremely dangerous to be dealing with these corrosive chemicals and trying to make a bomb out of them, very frequently, even if you don t hurt yourself, the
ringleader was. and they were able to figure that out through cell phones and things like that. apparently he plotted for 11 months but according to catherine herridge who was on with owe reilly last night he was no master mind. listen to this. the so-called ring leader, abdelhamid abaaoud is not the mastermind. he s like the tactical strategic guy who was on the ground to make a 9/11 analogy, he was like the mohammed atta. his job was to get the operatives, to get the weapons and to keep everyone in their lane so that the plot could be executed effectively, and that s important, because it means there are individuals higher up the food chain. more senior people with the vision who are still on the loose, as well as this bombmaker. so how did these people travel throughout paris unknown? as it turns out, the ringleader himself had bragged, you know, with the eu security such as it
floor, blew the windows out, and they eventually found abaaoud s body beneath it. and it was dna testing and apparently some fingerprinting that also allowed them to determine finally a day afterwards that it was him. so brian, still even though he s been killed and he is out of the picture, a major recruiter is out of the picture, the questions remain about the threats out there, the bombmaker who was in the middle of all this, and all these new videos coming out from isis who seem not to be fazed by any of it. and chris, in the middle of this pitched battle, hundreds of rounds being exchanged from large automatic weapons, propelled grenades. there is this exchange. we re going to play this audio between a female french police officer and the female terrorist now deceased who ended up
