Born in Dubuque, Iowa, he had a short but very prolific career on the West Coast from the 1940s until his death in 1962. Graas is celebrated as a pioneer of French horn in jazz, and for incorporating classical music into his jazz compositions.

His career has taken him all over the world, first with the renowned Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, and then as a soloist with many of the great European bands. He was a key member of the light jazz-fusion band, Flim & the BBs in the 1980s, then became a sought-after session player.
