Keep Terrebonne Beautiful has started a project to reduce the number of plastic straws heading to landfills.
The nonprofit group is collaborating with bars and restaurants and encouraging them not to give out straws right away and instead wait for customers to ask.
“This is a preventative way to keep straws out of the trash,” said Amanda Gibson, a group member who has helped spearhead the initiative. “It helps restaurants save money in the long run, and it also gets people thinking of small ways to reduce trash.”
Gibson, a Houma-area nutritionist, said she got the idea after seeing it work in other parts of the country.
Terrebonne teachers invited to free anti-litter workshop
Teachers and others who work with children are invited to a free workshop that aims to encourage young people to reduce waster and litter.
Rocksey’s Environmental Education program, sponsored by Keep Louisiana Beautiful, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 1 at Terrebonne s Main Library, 151 Library Drive in Houma. Space is limited to the first 25 teachers who register at bit.ly/klbteacherworkshop or keeplouisianabeautiful.org.
Billie Babin, Keep Terrebonne Beautiful’s executive director, will provide insight to litter-related issues in the parish and ways schools can be a part of the solution.
