Jackson voters will decide between nine possible candidates for who will fill city council seats in the next term. The filing deadline to get on the ballot was Tuesday, April 20, and the City Clerk’s Office has verified all petitions. And four people want to be the city’s next mayor, triggering an Aug. 3 primary election for that citywide seat.

Scott Park | MLive.com Facebook Share JACKSON, MI – Jackson Mayor Derek Dobies will not seek reelection for the city’s highest office. Dobies announced his decision to step away on Thursday, April 1, after two two-year terms as mayor. His current term as mayor ends this year. Dobies, 35, said he wants to step down and allow another person to take over as mayor, he said. He recommends Daniel Mahoney, a Democratic Jackson County commissioner representing District 7 in Jackson, because he thinks there’s an opportunity to let leadership reflect the residents of Jackson.
