A small town on interstate 90, a stopping place for people headed to the black hills, Mount Rushmore, yellowstone, points beyond, so a lot of motels, restaurants, filling stations, and all of my siblings, and my parents for that matter worked in one of those types of establishments ready much every summer. Thousands of years. In the 1850s, two rival town companies, one from dubuque, iowa and one from st. Paul, minnesota, both set their sights on the falls as a townsite. Interestingly, both companies had parties who arrived here within a few weeks of each other. Established a townsite, it was really speculation, land. Lotsplatted it out into and waited for settlers headed west to buy lots in the town that did not quite exist yet. 1857, and really in the 1850s they got along well with the indians who happened by here on their way to other places. There were 42 People Living in sioux falls. In the summer of 1862, there was some conflict with the sioux indians and what was called the startedrising by some in august of 1862. And the territorial governor ordered that the Big Sioux River valley be evacuated. 27th of august, 1860 two, all the people who lived here were evacuated and abandoned the site of the falls. The site of sioux falls remained abandoned until may of 1865 when the u. S. Army

Mr. Lauck we are in the heart of old sioux falls. Just toin the 1850s, the north of us is the famous falls on the Big Sioux River from which the city takes its name. Right now, we are on one of the main thoroughfares of sioux falls, south dakota. Along some of the older buildings of sioux falls, where you get a good feel of what would be considered the main street of sioux falls. This is part of the sculpture walk in Downtown Sioux Falls. This is the federal courthouse. You can see it is built out of this pink, sioux falls quartzite. It is one of the reasons settlers chose this area. It is implantable supply it is in plentiful supply. Jagged edge takes its title from f. Scott fitzgerald who is the author probably most famously of the great gatsby and if you remember your gatsby from back in high school or college you will remember nick carowinds is from minnesota. He went off to war and this would have been world war i and when he came back he decided that he thought it would be sort of dull to move back to minnesota which he saw as the ragged edge of the universe and he decided to move to new york and he got nixed up and arrained 20s on long island with gatsby and all that cast of characters from his book. In the end when he sees what happens to many of these characters he begins to see the ultimate west where he came from as the warm center of the world and so that contrast is what i tried to draw out in my new book book, warm center to jagged edge.
