Assam-Meghalaya firing incident: Mortal remains of forest guard handed over to family

Our Correspondent Diphu, Nov. 24 (EMN): The mortal remains of forest guard, Bidyasing Lekthe, who was killed in a mob clash at Mokroh under Jerikinding police station, West Karbi Anglong on Nov. 22, reached his home at Jaluk Lanteng in West Karbi Anglong on Thursday. His mortal remains was handed over by the Meghalaya administration to Karbi Anglong administration on Nov. 23 at Border outpost Khanduli and will be cremated on Nov. 25. Members and officials of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) visited the bereaved family and handed over an amount of INR 5 lakh from CEM Relief Fund to Basapi Timungpi, wife of the deceased. Executive Member (EM) Amarsing Tisso said Lekthe will be recognised as a Karbi national hero and his statue will be constructed at Mokroh, while a school in his name will also be set-up at Mokroh. Our Correspondent Diphu, Nov. 23 (EMN): Several Karbi Anglong civil organisations condemned the Mukrok firing incident in the Assam-Meghalaya border where six people were killed, including a forest guard, on Tuesday. In a joint press conference held at the District Press Club of Karbi Anglong office on Wednesday, Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) convener, Khorsing Teron, said, ‘We strongly condemn the vested interest group of people who provoked attack upon the forest and police personnel and demand a high-level proper investigation into the incident and deployment of more security personnel along the interstate border for the safety and security of government official and employees, protection of forest reserve and to maintain law and order.’ Teron also said, ‘We appeal to all sections of people — Karbi, Khasi, and Jaintia — living in the border area to maintain peace and communal harmony. Six killed in violence in Assam-Meghalaya border

Our Correspondent Diphu, Nov. 22 (EMN): At least six persons, including a forest guard, were killed in violence at the disputed Assam-Meghalaya border in the early hours of Tuesday at Mukrok under Jerikinding Police Station of West Karbi Anglong district, Assam after a truck allegedly laden with illegally felled timber was intercepted by forest guards. As per reports, at around 3 am, a timber-carrying truck was given a signal to stop at the Forest checkpoint at Mukrok but the truck did not stop and sped away. As the truck tried to flee, the forest guards fired at it and deflated a tyre. The vehicle’s driver and handyman and another person were then apprehended, though others managed to escape, West Karbi Anglong superintendent of police Imdad Ali told PTI. Police reinforcements were rushed to the spot when the forest guards contacted Zirikending police station.
