A sub-inspector in Bathinda district was dismissed from service on charges of having sexually exploited a woman in Bucho after a video of him allegedly raping her went viral, police sources said on Wednesday.
The cop, Gurwinder Singh, who was with Batinda Police’s Crime Investigation Agency-1 was accused of sexually exploiting the woman, a widow, after threatening to implicate her son in a false drug case, the sources said.
The victim claimed that Singh had booked her 20-year-old son in the case and had been using the charges to force himself on her. She claimed Singh had done so again on Tuesday, and that she’d alerted her relatives in the village, who brought other villagers to the woman’s house where he was allegedly raping her, the sources said.

Polling officials check EVMs in Amritsar on Saturday
BATHINDA: All is set for the elections at eight municipal corporations and 109 municipal councils and nagar panchayats across the state on Sunday. The polling parties left for the polling booths. The polling will be held from 8am till 4pm.
Going by a number of violent incidents in the run up to the elections during campaigning, including killing of two supporters of a candidate at Moga and an attack on the vehicle of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal at Jalalabad SDM office, elaborate security has been made to avoid or timely action in case of any untoward incident during polling.

Facing a backlash from farmers over the three agriculture laws, state BJP president Ashwani Sharma today addressed a meeting of the party workers in a private hotel in the city amid tight security.
Sharma first went to the residence of BJP leaders Kanchan Jindal and Ravinder, who sustained injuries in the clash between farmers and party workers on Friday, and inquired about their wellbeing.
After yesterday’s widespread protest against the BJP, the Bathinda police today made an elaborate arrangement with the heavy deployment of personnel on all the ways leading to the hotel, which was cordoned off with barricades. SSP Bhupinderjit Singh Virk and civil administration officials, including ADC and tehsildar, were present at the spot. Farmers under the banner of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) protested at some distance from the hotel and raised slogans against the BJP.
Bathinda/Jalandhar/Kaithal: There were tense moments between protesting farmers and BJP activists in Punjab and Haryana on Friday when functions held to mark the 96th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal BihariVajpayee became venues of protest. The main events where there was disruption, and even minor scuffles, were held at Punjab’s Bathinda, Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur and Haryana’s Kaithal.
In Bathinda, situation turned tense when a score of farmers broke police barricades and barged into an event organised by the BJP. The saffron party had to wind up the programme midway as the farm activists allegedly vandalised the venue and damaged chairs. The BJP activists held a protest against farmers, who are protesting against the three farm laws brought by central government, and even burnt an effigy of the state government. Bathinda SSP Bhupinderjit Singh Virk rushed to the spot to diffuse the situation as the police had a tough time in controlling situation.
