Resio Moses served as senator, ambassador, governor

SAIPAN, CNMI (Saipan Tribune, June 26, 2009)ÂClose friends in the CNMI of the late Resio S. Moses, vice speaker of the Federated States of Micronesia Congress, were saddened by his passing this week, remembering him as one of the icons of leadership in the region.
Moses, who stayed for many years on Saipan during the Trust Territory days, died Monday while undergoing treatment at the Pohnpei State Hospital. He was 65.
He was a classmate of Gov. Benigno R. Fitial at the University of Guam.

Legal counsel says permanent injunction still needed

SAIPAN, CNMI (Saipan Tribune, Jan. 16, 2013) – The Senate and Rep. Janet U. Maratita (IR-Saipan) and Sen. Ray A. Yumul (IR-Saipan) have amended their lawsuit against Northern Marianas’ Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, former attorney general Edward T. Buckingham, Commonwealth Utilities Corp. (CUC), and Saipan Development LLC (SDLLC) over an alleged illegal $190.8-million power purchase agreement deal.
Attorney Ramon K. Quichocho, counsel for plaintiffs Senate, Maratita and Yumul, told Saipan Tribune yesterday that Gov. Benigno R. Fitia s recent public announcement that the controversial power purchase agreement is void is a step in the right direction.

Republicans want to shift ‘funding problems back to territories’

SAIPAN, CNMI (Saipan Tribune, April 27, 2012) – A unified voice from U.S. territorial governors and delegates failed to block Republicans from reducing Medicaid funding for the territories, including the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas (CNMI).
Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan (Ind-MP) said yesterday that Republicans on the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee voted to take away some $100 million in Medicaid funding from the CNMI and increase the CNMI s local match by 11 percent.

SAIPAN, CNMI (Saipan Tribune, March 24) – The relocation of U.S. Marine troops from Okinawa, Japan, to the island of Tinian in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands has been set for January 2007, a milestone that is expected to play an important role in the CNMI s economic recovery.
Military spending on the island is projected to reach $10 billion over a five-year period.
A non-profit group also plans to undertake a $20 million war museum project on Tinian, according to Dr. Thomas D. Arkle Jr., the special consultant for resource development at the Tinian Mayor s Office.
