today and okay, they ricoh, 85.8, youngkin, he s holding his own in the ruled areas. that is one key, right? the other key is the suburban areas. and chesterfield to see if any more voters clicked in. he s holding his own in chesterfield with 55% of the vote. bret: bill, we have a long way to go, but right now would you rather be youngkin question bill: wow, that is the game, isn t it? i guess you could be right but the bellwether county, the predicted winners every time the last 40 years, one is more and right now youngkin has an edge in that county. the other county is prince edward and you talk about the game come if i can get it here, prince prince edward about youngkin has the lead too. those are your two bellwethers in the commonwealth, guys. bret: come back a lot, bill, thanks. we will watch results roll in and stick with fox news for
in an actual election results, the first county that i think will be the most complete county reporting that isn t in northern virginia will be chesterfield county, which is the suburban county of richmond. that s a county that if youngkin wins, he carries that county. he can it s hard to imagine mcauliffe carrying the county and losing the state. i do think chesterfield will be there s not many bellwethers in the state. chesterfield is as close to having one as we can find. i appreciate that you re going to be keeping your eyes on that. tonight on nbc news now. we ll let you go. mark murray, let me go to you. what are we looking for once the polls close? talk us through what you re seeing so far. let me emphasize just how close this race has been overall. and you end up looking at the real clear average and the candidates are almost locked in a dead heat right now.
not necessarily bellwethers, but we places where in terms of the contest between these two. but both in terms of the governor race and the legislative races, i ve been thinking a lot about black turnout, and black largely democratic turnout has been the answer to everything in terms of understanding democratic competitiveness. in states like virginia and others. obviously, white voters in the suburbs will turn out to be but it seems like black voter turnout and enthusiasm is as much as the story as anything. do we have anything that we should be watching for in that regard, in terms of that is a key metric, and you agree that that s a key metric? yeah, i mean virginia is about 20%, 18 to 20% black, the closer that is to 20 the better that is news that is for democrats. the more it drops off from there you re hoping for. potentially, we will tomorrow
bellwethers for how the democratic party is doing after a huge presidential election headed into midterms? yeah. absolutely. we put so much more national focus on states like virginia and new jersey than there might be if they were held next year, they probably would not get this amount of attention and scrutiny. i think for both states, it s instructive. i think there s not that much of a huge difference between a slim republican or democratic win in virginia. in new jersey, we think of it as a blue state. i recently learned if murphy wins a second term, he ll be the first since 1977. that would be a significant development in new jersey. both of these states really position them as critical bellwethers. we also saw this back in 2013 when mcauliffe won for the first time. he won by a narrow margin, and
legislation that they ultimately pass, and that the house is actually going to send us a registry date provision to effectuate that part of the immigration reform. those are all good things, but of course you know, as always, as i say, the devil is in the detail, but they re good bellwethers of democrats seeking to find a pathway forward on immigration. we re still a long way there, because of the senate parliamentarian, but we have a mission not to take no for an answer. senator, i know you ve been keeping a very close watch on what is going on in cuba, the 15th of november, there are planned protests asking once again for freedom. how do you see that? it is the right of the cuban people as it is the right of people anywhere to peacefully protest their grievances and to
