11th annual Jimmie Dyess Symposium to honor three for civic service

Editor s note: An earlier version of this story included incorrect venue information and did not make clear the Jimmie Dyess Symposium is an online-only event. The Chronicle regrets the error. The 11th annual Jimmie Dyess Symposium begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, but instead of drawing it s usual crowd at the Augusta Museum of History, this year s celebration will be a virtual one, available on the museum s website, Facebook page and YouTube channel. Honorees will be Doug Hastings, Terry Elam and Medal of Honor recipient Mike Rose. Those honored at the annual symposium receive the Distinguished American Award. Museum Executive Director Nancy Glaser said the virtual celebration will include interviews with each honoree, which were filmed separately with retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Perry Smith, who assists in organizing the event and acts as the master of ceremonies.

2020 Citizens of the Year: Couple dedicates their lives to serving others

As people drive through the line to collect styrofoam containers of food at Gering United Methodist Church, they stop and ask Melvin Shockley to say a prayer for them, or others in their lives. Fellowship is one of the reasons that Melvin became involved with the soup kitchen, seeing it as a way to serve his faith and the community. He and his wife, Mary Ann, have now been the driving force behind the First Assembly of God’s monthly “soup kitchen” for 16 years.

Girl becomes first in the Rochester area to earn Eagle rank and Gold Award

Created: December 14, 2020 04:12 PM ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)  Boy Scouts of America decided a few years ago to allow girls to join in the Cub Scout Level. They did this due to the high request from parents of young girls who wanted their daughters to be Scouts as well. Justine Cole is the first in our area to have a Girl Scout Gold Award and an Eagle Rank in Boy Scouts of America.  Around two years ago older girls were welcomed to join Scouts at the Boy Scout level. Though they can be considered a scout, their troop must still only be made up of all-girls. This allows both boys and girls to participate in Scout community events together but still have some separation. Both organizations have different values to offer.

view. absolutely. and that was our greatest fear. speaking as an eagle scout myself, i spent more than 12 years in the program. i love scouting, it made me the man i am today, and taught me a lost incredible lifelong skills, gave me some of my best friends. i had some of my most important values. so this is an experience we want to be, you know accessible to all of america s young men. and the reality, if it they had maintained this ban on gay youth, they would have continued to move further and further from the mainstream from where the rest of america is. that s not something we want to have happen. we want the scouting experience available to all men and it is relevant and people want to participate. if you look at the polling data, even the self-identified conservatives, 45 to 42, support ending the ban on gay scouts. so i think that s really a testament about like jonathan was saying, where we are with discrimination not being an american value. equality being an american va
