Share Via Email   |  A+A A- By PTI CHENNAI: Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan on Sunday yet again joined issue with the ruling AIADMK over late Chief Minister M G Ramachandran s (MGR) legacy, saying anyone who had ideals like the stalwart could be his heir . His party had ideals like him and therefore, we are his extension, Haasan said at a poll rally here, days after chief minister and AIADMK Co-coordinator K Palaniswami said no one other than the ruling party can lay claim to MGR s legacy.

Lesser-known party s decision brightens Kamal Haasan s prospects of getting Battery Torch symbol

Express News Service CHENNAI: The decision of MGR Makkal Katchi, a lesser-known party in the State, to surrender the Battery Torch symbol to the Election Commission has brightened the Makkal Neethi Maiam s chances of getting it back for the 2021 Assembly elections.      Already, the MNM has filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Election Commission to allot the Battery Torch symbol to it in Tamil Nadu too.  The MNM, which has got this symbol for Puducherry this time, also asked the court to restrain the MGR Makkal Katchi from using that symbol.    MGR Viswanathan, who claims he is the  original political heir and the foster cadre of MGR , in his communication with the Election Commission on Saturday said he had been running his political party with the view of establishing MGR rule again and many of the loyalists of MGR have joined him in this political journey.

In a statement, MNM said it had stated in its prayer that it is entitled to the Battery Torch symbol under law. “MNM has, in its prayer, stated that it is entitled to the ‘Battery Torch’ symbol for the election to the T.N. legislative assembly as per the provisions of the election symbols (reservation and allotment) order, 1968,” the statement said.

According to sources, MNM had urged EC to reconsider its decision and demands regarding the party symbol. The MNM contested the general election under the Battery Torch symbol. Haasan, who kick-started his party s campaign for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls on Sunday, had confirmed about contesting the 2021 elections, adding that he will announce the constituency, from which he will contest in the coming days.
