Ventilation fans inside that tunnel to begin activating. Of course, it was rapidly filling with smoke. The ntsb says there was also severe arcing damage. And we also know that many of those passengers were on that train for about an hour. So it appears now from this report that the ntsb essentially knew what the trouble began but they dont know why. Theyre looking to a number of things. Was there damage somehow to that third rail . Was there a surge in electricity . Did something hit that rail . Right now, they dont know. Typically, the ntsb investigation can take quite a lodge time. They say theyre going through all the maintenance records and training records. That severely damaged by electr arcing during mondays metro incident. This was in a tunnel south of the lenphant pla station. Now, early information from the nationfed s that when that arc occurred a Circuit Breaker, a safety component, tripped, cutting power to one section of track. But it would be another 46 minutes before the damaged section was completely cut off. When workers at Metro Operations Center tripped another Circuit Breaker by remote control. In the meantime ventilation fans had b turned on inside the tunnel but firefighters report were delayed by uncertaiy or weather the track they needed to get to rescue riders was still electrifie also hamper tharg efforts, just gettine doors open.
