They wouldnt make it out alive. Everybody just got as low as they possibly could. Now federal investigators are on the scene trying to figure out what went wrong. News 4 at 11 00 starts now. An awful situation on the metro train today. It filled up with smoke. And tonight a woman is dead. Dozens of people are in hospitals. Good evening. Im jim vance. Im wendy reerg sitting in for doreen gentzler. The tunnel filled with thick smoke. Riders frantically tried to escape just to get a breath of air. We have Team Coverage tonight beginning with adam tusk with the latest on the investigation. You got inside that station tonight, correct . Reporter thats right, wendy. When you went inside you could still smell the smoke inside the station. You also notice that the ntsb the National Transportation safety board, is inside looking at the rails. Theyll be holding a News Conference here in 15 minutes. Well bring it to you live. But as far as today people praying for their lives as the situation unfolded. As riders were guided along the dark tracks outside the Lenfant Plaza station by emergency personnel, some prayed. Inside the rail cars a chaotic scene played out. Tonight federal investigators walked that same stretch of track, the acrid smell of smoke still thick in the air and some new pieces of the puzzle are coming together. First, we know this incident happened about 150 feet south of the Lenfant Plaza station in a tunnel. This was an issue involving the tunnel not a train. There is enough damage to the tunnel that it will need repairs. Some here on scene describe the smell of smoke as a burnt fiberglass smell, the cover of the third rail is made of fiberglass. The ntsb will hold a live News Conference here at 11 15. Well bring it to you live as updates become available. Reporting live at Lenfant Plaza, adam tuss. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a statement today, she said we are all saddened by tonights events. Jackie a good look at what the riders saw today, huh . Well jim, this was a terrifying event for them. It went on for nearly an hour and some riders captured it on their cell phones. [ coughing ] its hard to imagine not being panicked by this the yellow line train filled with lungburning eyetearing smoke sat stopped in the tunnel just prior to the Lenfant Plaza station. The conductor did his best to keep passengers calm in an unimaginable situation. Please stay calm please do not open the doors. If you open the doors, the train cannot move. Reporter inside one of the metro transit s busiest station, the platform too, was filling up with smoke. In image riders trooping through a tunnel to an evacuation hatch. Once above ground dozens of people needed medical attention for everything from smoke inhalation to symptom of panic attack. They were given emergency medical treatment at the scene and many were then sent to Emergency Rooms at George Washington and Howard University hospitals. We spoke to fitz carter of arlington as he sat on a medical bus waiting to be evaluated. Everybody just got as low as they possibly could. To the ground. Because thats where the best possibility for oxygen. Reporter sadly, despite heroic cpr efforts by both an offduty employee and fellow riders a rider died. There was a woman who was in distress on that train and im sorry to say shes passed away. Our condolences go out to that family. Reporter the name of the rider who died has not been released yet. Live in southwest washington Jackie Bensen news 4. A lot of people thought they would not make it out of that tunnel alive today. Many became upset, tried to comfort each other. The woman who captured this video said she spent 45 minutes in the smokefilled train. Darcy spencer spoke with her and joins us from mount vernon scare. Darcy . Reporter you imagine youre sitting on one of those rail cars the lights go out, the train stops, its filling up with smoke. Youre in a pitchblack tunnel with no way to get out. One woman said all she could do was pray. Anyone needs to call somebody . Reporter this video offers a glimpse for what it was like for panicked passengers. Is everyone okay . No reporter it was taken by this woman. She was five minutes into her ride from the Lenfant Plaza metro when it came to a sudden stop. The lights went out. And i was sitting by the door so i could see the smoke coming in pretty quickly. Reporter she spent about 45 minutes on the train not knowing if she and the other passengers would make it out alive. Youre hearing other people crying youre seeing people passing out. It was a horrific thing to witness. Reporter for passengers who were not stuck in the tunnel it was mass confusion. They dont seem to have much of a system here. You know i dont know whats going on. Reporter thousands stranded as they tried to get home from work and school. And there was a long wait for shuttle buses. Were cold wet, were just still waiting. Reporter when the buses did come to the mt. Vernon square stop riders were told they were being dropped off at Lenfant Plaza metro. Dropping at Lenfant Plaza and thats where the fire is. Thats crazy. Metro needs to get it together. Reporter you could hear a lot of people coughing on that video after breathing in all of that smoke for probably about an hour. The one woman we interviewed tonight is very concerned. She said she plans to go to her doctor tomorrow and just make sure that shes okay. Were reporting live tonight in northwest, darcy spencer, news 4. Thanks darcy. Metro says that it is likely that the investigation and whatever damage there is to that tunnel will have an impact on the morning commute. The biggest impact will be on the green and yellow line writers. As adam reported the best Case Scenario is single tracking but if things remain as they are now, those lines will be shut down between gallery place, navy yard an the pentagon. So here is how to get around the closure. If you need to get between gallery place right here and down here to the navy yard youve got an option. 74 and p6 buses. That come bipbination between gallery place and the pentagon the options are the 70 and 16x buses. Metro says you can take the d. C. Circulator from navy yard to Eastern Market or Union Station or use the vre to get to and from northern virginia. When you get up tomorrow morning, first thing check nbcwashington. Doug, what are we looking for tomorrow . We could see a repeat of what we saw this morning, the differen is we saw the rain and the cold temperatures this morning bringing ice. Tomorrow morning it will be the rain that we have now and the colder air thats currently moving in. We still see some rain across the region from baltimore down i95 into Prince Georges County right into fairfax county. A very thin band of rain continuing to make its way off to the east. Then thats really about it here. You see the whole system over the last six hours pouring on in through the region. You notice some snow on the back side of this. That tells you that colder air is moving in and were talking about much colder air. Take a look at the numbers. 42 right now in washington. Thats actually on the mild side. Look at Columbus Ohio 24 29 in pittsburgh and that cold air continues to move through our region. Well see ice on the roads and on the sidewalks. The Defense Department says tonight that no chasfied information was compromised when hackers got into central commands twitter and youtube account. A group called the cybercaliph took over promoting proisis. And all of those posts were quickly taken down. A glitch and not a hacking. Thats the word from the u. S. Office of Personnel Management when we asked them about the potential issues with federal retirees today. Retirees logging into their personal accounts may have had access to other peoples personal information. The agency insists the website problems were because of a technical malfunction. They say they will let retirees know if their information was compromised. The Prophet Muhammad will be featured on the next cover of charlie hebdo. Survivors of last weeks terror attacks in paris, plan to show muhammad shedding a tear and holding a sign saying je suis charlie which means i am charlie. French police are still searching for as many as six members of that terrorist cell who may have been involved in the attack against that newspaper and the jewish market. And they say there will be Stronger Security presence at airports. The tsa will do more random searches of Airline Passengers and carryon luggage there. And developing right now, were awaiting a press conference from the ntsb about todays metro emergency in Lenfant Plaza. Officials are expected to the search intensified today for two sisters from maryland who vanished 40 years ago. The lyon sisters disappeared after visiting wheaton mall. Federal agents along with Montgomery County police are now combing a remote hillside in southwest virginia more than 200 miles away. Mark se graves is there. This is Taylor Mountain in a remote part of Bedford County virginia. Despite the persistent rain and fog, search teams have been at it since early this morning. The search began along the hillside. You can see the police tape along that fence line where the search first began. Theres a second dig site further up the hill in those woods. Each bucket filled with dirt is then taken over to these sifting stations where fbi forensics experts go through each bucketful by hand. We can tell you there are 12 fbi agents here there are also 8 officers from Montgomery County police along with Virginia State and Bedford CountySheriffs Department and theres a forensics experts from ratford university. One of the officials here told me today, while they did not find anything yet, they plan to be back out here tomorrow morning and theyll stay at it all day. Reporting in Bedford CountyMark Segraves news 4. It could cost you more to enjoy the c o canal. The National Parks service wants to raise the prices there. Parking fees will go up from 5 to 10. Campground would double from 10 to 20. If you want to reserve tables in the picnic area the price would go from 125 to 250 a day. On weekends and holidays that will be 350. Officials say the park needs to raise the money to stay open. And local police are trying to figure out who left this little puppy to die in a parking lot. He was found on taswell terrace. When police found him he was in a dirty crate and he was star have beening. He was so badly malnourished he was having seizures. But its in the 20s just back about 100 miles and that colder air continues to move our way. Theres that rain right now coming on through the d. C. Metro area through portions of the baltimore region. You see it right through the ft. Belvoir area and bowie youll see that rain on your doorstep in the next 15 to 20 minutes. Behind it the colder air. Notice where its coming from. Right across the great lakes from canada bringing snow showers in there. Lakeeffect snows, for us its going to be the colder air. Look at the colder air thats coming. By early tomorrow morning, these will be the wind chills. 18 in d. C. 13 in gaithersburg 9 in frederick. Tuesday afternoon, 2 00 17 in frederick, 21 in manassas 18 in winchester and even tomorrow evening were still dealing with wind chills in the teens all day. Now, 6 00 to 8 00 a. M. Watch for ice. Temperatures around 29. As we move through the day tomorrow those wind chills and those temperatures will actually fall through the day. Breezy and cold with a High Temperature of 25 or rather a temperature of 25 degrees in that 5 00 to 7 00 hour. Low to moderate side. That moderate side becoming as a result of that breezy and very cold air making its way in here. Now, the next couple of days temperatures start to rebound. Not on wednesday, temperature of 32 on wednesday. Less in the way of cold. But we could see flurries south and east of d. C. Areas into portions of Southern Maryland. Take a look mainly east of i95 wind chills in the 20s still but this is only from washington down around Southern Maryland and fredericksburg. Thats the best chance to see flurry activity but thats all. As we move towards the weekend, friday 45 then the sevenday, 48 on saturday, 50 degrees on sunday. Were talking about the warmest couple of days in the sevenday forecast coming. We have to get through the next couple of days. Were talking about big time temperatures falling today down to 25 in the afternoon. Were talking about some of that cold air that continues to make its way in here.
