CUMBERLAND FORESIDE – Thomas Prescott Leavitt passed away peacefully on April 26, 2021 in the early morning hours with his chosen caregiver, Shelley Silva-Bashaw, by his side reading him his favorite poetry. Thomas was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Barbara Helen Leavitt, in November 2020. He leaves behind David and Shelley Bashaw of Norton, Massachusetts, whom he chose to help him navigate his last years with grace and dignity.
Thomas was born in Gardner, Mass., on April 5, 1941 to Roger R. Leavitt and Rita Morrissey Leavitt. He graduated from Gardner High School in 1959 with honors and continued his education at the University of Massachusetts where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1963. Services this Afternoon for Slain Watauga County Officers

Funeral services for Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox will be held this afternoon (May 6) at the Holmes Convocation Center, 111 Rivers Street, in Boone. The services will begin at 3 p.m. and will end at approximately 4 p.m. Doors will open to the public at 1 p.m. All guests will be required to wear face coverings. Face coverings will be provided for those guests who do not bring them.
Immediately prior to the services, a processional will travel east on Rivers Street and past the Rivers Street parking deck before arriving at the Holmes Convocation Center. The North Carolina Troopers Association Caisson Unit will support the services.

PORTLAND – William E. Mulkern died unexpectedly on Feb. 17, 2021. He was born in Portland on Nov. 2, 1939, a son of Robert and Jane Roach Mulkern. Bill spent most of his life surrounded by water, on the water, or near the water. Raised on Peaks Island, he entered the Coast Guard Reserves as a teenager and retired as a CWO4 BOSN (Chief Warrant Officer 4 Boatswain) after 30 years’ service.
He finished his USCG career on another island, Governors Island, N.Y. Following his retirement from the USCG, he was a captain of the Frye Island Ferry on Sebago Lake for 20 years while working concurrently in security for Hannaford Brothers for 16 years.
