On April 7, 1947, Henry Ford, auto industry pioneer and the grandson of Irish immigrants from Ballinascarthy, Co. Cork, died at 83 years of age. Born in Dearborn, Michigan in July 1883, Ford studied engineering and went on to invent the iconic Model T and the assembly line, and to found Ford Motor Company. He also introduced the now-standard concept of minimum wage, and was an early supporter of the 8 hour work day.

The live webinar at which 15 finalists of the Grassland Farmer of the Year competition were profiled, category winners and the overall winner announced
On Tuesday, 19 January, the Grassland Farmer of the Year Awards Ceremony took place as a live webinar.
During this live webinar, the 15 finalists were profiled and winners of each category along with the overall winner were announced. Caroline Walsh from Ballinascarthy, Co. Cork was announced as the Overall Winner of the Grassland Farmer of the Year 2020.

The 2020 Grassland Farmer of the Year is Caroline Walsh from Ballinscarthy in west Cork. Caroline won the dairy award and the overall award for top performance in grassland management. She milked 72 cows in 2020 and grew 14.2tDM/ha.
Originally from Ballinadee near Bandon, she is married to Joe, an agricultural contractor and they have five children. Caroline s dairy career started in 2009 when she was awarded new entrant milk quota and leased a farm to milk 40 cows. The couple converted Joe’s home farm to dairy in 2014 and Caroline’s herd was moved there in 2015.
