A Sutton man who ran a Worcester investment firm defrauded clients of nearly $3 million by creating fictitious accounts and paying clients with funds from other clients, the FBI and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission allege.
James K. Couture, 42, is facing both civil and criminal actions in federal court, records show, and has signed a plea agreement on charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
The FBI alleges in court documents that Couture perpetrated the fraud through an investment advisory services firm he created, The Private Wealth Management Group LLC, as well as a shell company he created, Legacy Financial Group LLC.
A Harwich resident was among nine men charged Thursday in connection with what was described as a “large-scale” and “wide-ranging” cocaine trafficking conspiracy that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts said involved packages sent through the mail.
“We allege that the defendants received parcels sent via U.S. Mail from Puerto Rico and containing kilograms of cocaine which we allege they then sold here in our communities,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell in a statement Thursday night. “The trafficking conspiracy was detected and dismantled thanks to effective investigative work by the people who protect our mail system and by local and state law enforcement.”

A Rhode Island man was sentenced Friday to more than nine years in prison for robbing five banks in the Greater Boston area in 2018, according to the U.S. Attorney s Office in Massachusetts.
Dong Lee, 50, and a co-defendant, Charles Lamont Wheeler, were arrested Sept. 14, 2018, after robbing banks in Avon and Brockton then leading the police on a high-speed chase in Attleboro, Acting U.S. Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell said in a news release.
