US wages and benefits jump as economy reopens

WASHINGTON (AP) Wages and benefits grew quickly for U.S. workers in the first three months of the year, a sign that businesses are starting to offer higher pay to fill newly-opened jobs. U.S. workers’ total compensation rose 0.9% in the January-March quarter, the largest gain in more than 13 years, the Labor Department said Friday. That's up from 0.7% in the final three months of last year. Still, the increase is just barely above 0.8% gains.

The company said a global shortage of semiconductors will be a potential drag on its output. Ford said a fire at a Japanese chip supplier worsened the shortage situation. Ford shares tumbled to a two-month low Thursday after the vehicle maker said a worldwide shortage in semiconductors will slash its quarterly production. The company joins others in saying that lack of chip supplies has affected operations. Apple CEO Tim Cook said it has been forced to delay iMac and iPad production and Tesla CEO Elon Musk told investors the electric vehicle maker has had insane difficulties with its supply chain over the last quarter.

Gene Lollis wants farmers protected from “unjust, nuisance lawsuits,” he wrote in his March 31 guest column, “Florida’s right to farm legislation protects food supply across state.” What more do farmers want from government, given that 40 percent of farmers’ net income in 2020 came directly from our government (taxpayers)? Sure, farmers are producing more food with less land, but at what cost … pesticides, weed killer and fertilizers with names 20 letters long, showing up in our food, soil, and/or water. Animals are given antibiotics that make infections more dangerous to humans, too.
