vice president mike pence while he was governor. the court s action avoids an election year review of the case amid a flurry of new state laws that are aimed at stifling abortion rights. claire, i think this is predictable. when the indiana law came out, both of us said, this is you know what, this is going to get overturned by a lower court. the supreme court is not going to accept it. it s just going to remain. it is like assault weapon bans. when states ban what they define as assault weapons. the supreme court never takes those up. they allow them to stand, without ruling explicitly that such bans are constitutional. well, i don t know what s going to happen on roe v. wade. it is clear to me that around the country, there are a whole lot of people that are trying to set up cases to overturn roe v. wade. even in my state, which certainly the majority of people
way and in a special election for a seat that s the only thing on the ballot that goes away as a position in nine months, do you need to stoke those folks? well, i think you just hit on it, chris. i think those people don t have to be stoked. they re so stoked themselves, the anti-trump voters, that they re getting that regardless. and conor lamb is a lesson to us as a party. conor lamb ran as a conservative democrat, certainly a moderate. he is moderate on gun rights. he s for background checks but against assault weapon bans. he s pro life, although he said he would vote to keep planned parenthood up and running. he is a true moderate and he reflects the district. our progressive wing has to understand and i consider myself a progressive. we have to understand that these type of democrats are the ones that can win. only joe manchin can have any hope of winning in west virginia. so, we ve got to continue to support and back these type of democrats because they ll be casting the most
thank you for both for being here. let me start with you, joe, on this. you heard what the president said within the last week. his idea for a moment that he would support nonsales of assault weapons to those not yet 21 years old. what do you think has been discussed so far is a good idea to implement? there are lots of people out there discussing lots of ideas. we should be looking at everything schools can do to keep themselves safer, but unfortunately the reality is we ve tried these type of assault weapon bans in the past and they ve been shown to be failed policy. we need new ways for school to enact safety in a more efficient way. your response on this, ron, in terms of the ideas that have been discussed and you ve seen the president move back and forth on this. i think the policy has failed also. first, joe, i want to thank you
mass shootings in the united states. it seems also not ancillary for those interesting in more gun control. it s perhaps one step forward. may be an easy get on the part of the president. it s not something that the nra has said they re against. they want them regulated, not eliminated, somewhere in there, some legislation or some finding maybe gotten. but it s not going to get at the more politically divisive issues of how to control weapons in the united states or whether to have additional controls. shepard: is this matter of arming, i believe as the president said, teachers and administrators and others in the school to be armed, is that from your reporting a subject changer? it s not something that anybody has been pushing for. there s people within that school very vocally pushing for assault weapon bans, stricter
thinking and how far they re willing to go. it s a different conversation than after the las vegas shooting where the line was it s too soon to talk about this and nothing happened for months and months so there s a different tone. but based on my reporting i don t think everything is going to go as far as democrats or gun control advocates would like to see it and i think the president made that clear. he raised intentionally this issue of getting rid of gun-free school zones, of arming teachers, he said he knew that was controversial, he put that out there, that was a message that was heard well by conservatives by his base, that he was not talking about banning assault weapons and ar-15. maybe changes to background checks but that he was still there guy. he just tweeted i never said give teachers guns what i said was to look at the possibility
