television, what is your advice to people in television about him taking the entire body of donald trump s campaign, how it was covered, up to this moment of his presidency? well, it s hard because it is a story and so especially when he s going to flirt with dianne feinstein over a bill of love and then again over guns, you know, it s news. so, someone is going to pay even if nothing happens. right. it s still sort of the news of the day. he is the consummate subject changer and it is probably the fit over everything that was happening, probably led to the announcement on the tariffs. though i do think in one instances a loud and proud protectionist. he has had this fixationist, once commanding economy in japan to speak about the japanese, then he switched to the chinese. i do know that congressmen can do a lot in the next couple days in his administration. but he s going to bang his fists over this one. but on guns and on immigration and a lot of these issues, he
mass shootings in the united states. it seems also not ancillary for those interesting in more gun control. it s perhaps one step forward. may be an easy get on the part of the president. it s not something that the nra has said they re against. they want them regulated, not eliminated, somewhere in there, some legislation or some finding maybe gotten. but it s not going to get at the more politically divisive issues of how to control weapons in the united states or whether to have additional controls. shepard: is this matter of arming, i believe as the president said, teachers and administrators and others in the school to be armed, is that from your reporting a subject changer? it s not something that anybody has been pushing for. there s people within that school very vocally pushing for assault weapon bans, stricter
special adviser to the president. yeah. who knew if you got up to go to the bathroom that you had a seat filler. other people do too. this is one of those things about context and proportion with this guy that you ve got to pick your hills you ll fight for. this was not anything that should have had nick s hair on fire at this particular summit. but it gives him a chance to once again do what he does best, which is subject changing. he is the greatest subject changer in chief that we have ever had. and that s what he s doing. did you feel like this was a big issue that ivanka sat down at that seat? if you ll excuse me, my daughter s going to fill my seat. you know, i do think also that there s a misperception that this was an attack on ivanka. it s not. no. it was fundamentally his son is being attacked. but that president trump was disrespectful to the g-20 for
many americans want. has he stepped on his own line that over the weekend, the chaos that he created, the trust that was lost in the last 48 hours, is that going to overshadow an executive order that maybe is cohesive and can get through the legal system? i don t know if it s the same audience. i think the people he is appealing to on immigration are those that supported him, but beyond that. those concerned about national security with the chaos over the weekend. that s another kind of audience, right? if you are supportive of trump on immigration, you are supportive of what he is saying, you know, talking about these, i heard this and this. so, i think, you know, it s kind of messy, this administration kind of thrives on that in a way. i guess it s not the right word. they drive on chaos because they feel he is in charge or something like that. so, i do think this could give them the opportunity to change the sub jengt. it s not a subject changer with
political process. joining me now new york times nick confessore. nice seeing you. this is a way to get hillary clinton s campaign back on track and not dealing with other issues they can t control. a subject changer, a solid plan. it offers everything that the left has asked for on this issue, and perhaps equally importantly, it approaches an issue that is very important to bernie sanders, that he has been talking a lot about wrfrb it s important to the left, like i said, so it could be a good kind of way for her to change the subject after a bad summer. well, actually, it s not just bernie sanders who has been talking about this. also something donald trump has been talking about. look, there is a tremendous anger at the establishment right now. there is tremendous anger about special interests and corruption. this is one way to approach that issue in a way she thinks she can get action on. a way to harness some of that energy, i believe. at the same time, hillary clinton
