Over 600 state-run madrasas being closed in India’s Assam, assembly passes bill

India s Assam government is going to close down over 600 state-run madrasas and turning those into general schools from next year.
To this effect, Assam state assembly on Wednesday night amid walkout by opposition Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) passed a bill.
From April 1 next year, more than 600 state-run madrasas will be converted into upper primary, high and higher secondary schools with no change of status, pay, allowances and service conditions of the teaching and non-teaching staff, according to the bill.

Guwahati, Dec 30: All the government-funded Madrassas are set to shut down and transform into general schools with the Assam Assembly on Wednesday passing a Bill amidst a walkout by the opposition after their demand to send the legislation to the Select Committee was rejected.

GUWAJATI: The Assam legislative assembly on Wednesday passed the repeal bill bringing an end to madrassas under the now dissolved madrassa education board which were being funded by the state. All these provincialised and non-provincialised madarasas under the state board will now be converted into general Upper primary, high school and higher secondary school.
Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the passing of the repeal bill as his “gift to Islamic society”.
