The government in Assam state, led by India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), argued the new law was a result of a popular demand for “general education” in Islamic schools, known locally as madrassas.

An Indian state has passed a law to ban all Islamic schools and convert them into regular schools, drawing criticism that the move aims to suppress Muslims in the Hindu-majority country, numerous sources reported.
Assam, India will be converting more than 700 madrasas government-run Islamic schools into general education schools by April. The state is run by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been at the center of ongoing tensions between India’s Muslims and Hindus.
The schools are being closed because they provide sub-standard education compared to regular schools, and do not address “the temporal world and its earthly concerns” in their curriculum, according to the government. Madrasas include education focused on the Quran, Islamic law and subjects offered in most schools, like math and science. Once the schools are converted, they will no longer be able to teach students the Quran.

Dispur (Assam) [India], December 30 (ANI): A bill, seeking to abolish all state-run Madrassas and transform them into regular schools, has been passed by Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
Taking to Twitter, Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his happiness over the passage of the bill and said that all Madrassas being run under the government stand converted into regular educational institutes with effect on April 1, 2021. Glad that the Bill pertaining to repeal of Provincialisation of Madrassas has been passed, even as Assam Congress and AIUDF expectedly staged a walkout in Assembly. GUWAJATI: The Assam legislative assembly on Wednesday passed the repeal bill bringing an end to madrassas under the now dissolved madrassa education board which were being funded by the state. All these provincialised and non-provincialised madarasas under the state board will now be converted into general Upper primary, high school and higher secondary school.
Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the passing of the repeal bill as his “gift to Islamic society”.

Guwahati: Assam Legislative Assembly has passed a bill, which sought to abolish all state-run Madrassas and transform them into regular schools. The bill was passed on Wednesday.
Assam Minister of Finance, Education, Health and PWD, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma took it to Twitter to express his happiness over the passage of this new bill.
