Game of the Year: #5 - Astro s Playroom
Share:
The PlayStation 5 wasn t short of stellar launch games, but we re not sure many expected a freebie pack-in title to be among the best. Believe it or not, Astro s Playroom is an absolute gem; the fact all PS5 owners get it for free means your next-gen journey starts with a bang.
All this game needed to be was a decent example piece for the DualSense controller s capabilities. However, Asobi Team didn t stop at creating a simple tech demo. After finding success with Astro Bot Rescue Mission on PlayStation VR, the studio brought the little guy back for a short but very sweet adventure on Sony s latest hardware. The result is something really rather special. It does run you through all the PS5 pad s key features, but it goes way beyond that.

Looking back at the games we played this year reads a bit like a soundtrack to a disaster film, with each game representing a specific piece of time. We dove into
Animal Crossing headfirst as lockdowns began. Then
Jackbox was a go-to for Zoom happy hours with friends and family. As time and the pandemic wore on and as reality sunk deeper into our lives and routines,
Hades conveyed the idea of persistence in the face of hell itself. And so on.
The games here offered some escapism, some human connection, a joyful retreat from the turmoil we faced and continue to face. We appreciate the developers of these games as well, who had no idea the context in which their work would exist. We re thankful that these 10 games in particular came out when they did.

Look, I could waste all of our time trying to scrape together some desperately unoriginal jape about about how 2020 has ground the collective spirit of the human race into a fine paste, proven without a shadow of a doubt we re occupying The Worst Timeline, or ruined future seasons of Black Mirror by overshadowing whatever hellish future Charlie Brooker could possibly dream up.
I m not going to do that, though. At this point, I m running on fumes and can barely muster a coherent pun, let alone a rousing introduction to an end-of-year listicle. I mean, we both know the score at this point. You want to see if one of your favorite games makes an appearance on this critically meaningless list (which you re probably reading on the toilet), and I want to fuel my sense of self-importance by waxing lyrical about some of the digital comfort food that made this year vaguely bearable.
Star Wars: Squadrons
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege Deluxe Edition
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2
