The number of patients hospitalized at Fauquier Hospital as a result of COVID-19 increased to 14 over the weekend, according to Fauquier Health CEO Chad Melton. Last week, on Dec. 8, he said the hospital had been treating six to eight COVID patients consistently.
He said Monday that the recent increase in COVID-related hospitalizations was one of the reasons that the hospital decided Friday to further restrict visitations in the hospital. (See accompanying story about restrictions.)
For perspective, the highest number of COVID patients the hospital had treated at one time –earlier in the pandemic – was 12, said Melton.
He said, “We are well staffed and prepared for a surge in patients,” but he clarified, “It’s day to day. As of right now, we are in a good place.” He said, though, that “staff are tired, and it’s difficult for them to pick up extra shifts.”

Staff Journalist Fauquierâs board of supervisors Thursday night honored its Citizens of the Year â one from each the countyâs five magisterial districts.
The ceremony normally takes place in the first-floor meeting room of the Warren Green Building in Warrenton.
But because of COVID-19, the board last month agreed to conduct its December meeting at a larger venue to accommodate award recipients and their guests. The 24-minute presentation occurred at the Fauquier High School auditorium in Warrenton.
