It was Cancer Awareness Night for round two of the Washington and Fairfield rivalry showdown on Friday with the Demons splitting the girl/boy basketball doubleheader.
As heard on KCII, the Demon boys utilized a fast offensive start and pulled away late to capture a season sweep of the Trojans (1-4) with a 61-45 win. Fairfield’s Max Weaton was averaging 25 points a night coming in and quickly recorded 10 first quarter points. Washington’s Lucas Kroll then drew the assignment on the sophomore and held him to just four points the rest of the game. Weaton’s first quarter kept the Trojans around trailing just 19-12 after one and 33-21 at the break. Fairfield started the second half on a 6-0 run, but the Demons answered with a run themselves to get it back to double digits and the game never got any closer. The second meeting between Southeast Conference rivals will be tonight in Washington when the Demons host Fairfield for a girl/boy basketball doubleheader.
The Demon girls (1-8) are riding high after picking up their first win on Monday against Burlington by a 53-52 final. Anna Nacos led all scorers with 23 points and Josie Tanner recorded a career-high 19 points. They will need to carry that momentum into tonight against a Fairfield (2-1) team they lost to by a 53-22 score in December. Danielle Breen has led the Trojans with 11.7 points a night and Hannah Simpson hauls in 10 rebounds a game.
The Demon boys will try to put the kibosh to a two-game losing skid after dropping a pair of heartbreakers to Burlington and Albia to start the second half of the season. Washington (5-3) will try to keep pace a top of the SEC with a 3-1 conference mark tied with Burlington and Keokuk in the loss column. The first half of the season concluded for the Washington girls’ basketball team last week and the Demons were on the short end of a 55-41 affair at Fort Madison.
The Bloodhounds (6-1) were methodical in this one by taking an 11-7 advantage after one, 22-13 at the break, and stretched it out to 38-22 after three to put the game on ice. Anna Nacos was a bright spot for the Washington offense with 21 points on the night.
The Demons head into the break 0-8 and resume play January 4th at Burlington.
The first half of the season concludes tonight for the Washington basketball teams when they meet up with Fort Madison for Southeast Conference action.
The Demon boys (4-1) have won both of their conference games by single digits with the latest being a 67-62 victory over Fairfield on Saturday. Going 22 of 30 from the line and out rebounding the Trojans 45-30 helped the Demons close out the nail biting victory. Kasen Bailey led the way with 20 points and Ethan Patterson had 19. Trashaun Willis added 12 and Lance Sobaski hauled in 15 rebounds. Fort Madison is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the league after a 48-36 victory over Keokuk on Friday. Dayton Davis has been a steady force with 13.5 points and 10.2 rebounds a night. The Bloodhounds seem to be improved from a 6-16 campaign last year where the Demons swept them in a pair of games.
Southeast Conference play finally got started for the Washington basketball teams last night against Mount Pleasant and the schools split on the evening.
The girls’ game in Washington was heard on KCII and the Demons were on the short end of a 71-52 score. After a tough start breaking the Mount Pleasant press in the first couple minutes, the Demons started to settle in offensively and kept the game close. Josie Tanner hit three first quarter triples to trail just 17-10 after one and Anna Nacos was big in keeping it a six point game at half with 10 points at the break. Late in the third Mount Pleasant’s Andrea Lopreato started to heat up and stretched the lead out to 17 after the quarter and they never looked back from there. Lopreato finished with a game-high 25 points. Nacos led the Demons with 20 points and all of Tanner’s 12 points came from behind the arc.
