The second to last Southeast Conference game of the winter is tonight for the Washington basketball teams when they face off with Fort Madison for the second time this season.
The Washington girls will have their hands full with a Bloodhound squad that sits atop of the league with a 7-1 mark and 14-1 overall. The crimson and black have one of the top players in the conference in Malarie Ross, as the junior knocks down 44% of her threes and produces 21 points a game. The Demons are 2-14, 2-6 in the league, and seek a bounce back night after a 52-25 setback to Mid-Prairie on Monday. Anna Nacos registers 9.9 points a contest and Alex Murphy brings in 6.3 rebounds. These two squads met on December 22nd with the Bloodhounds capturing a 55-41 victory.
I wouldn’t say it was a full on “Grinch” move by stealing a game away from the opponent, but snatching a victory at the last minute (literally) was what the Washington boys’ basketball team did last night in a fourth quarter comeback to triumph over Fort Madison 58-55.
As heard on KCII, the first quarter went as scripted for the Demons by racing out to a 9-0 lead and 18-7 advantage after one on the strength of suffocating half court defense and hot shooting from Trashaun Willis with three triples. The lead grew to as large as 14, but Kasen Bailey picked up his third foul with seven minutes left in the half and the tide immediately turned. The short handed Demons struggled to bring the ball up the court in the Bloodhounds’ 1-2-2 press and 6’4’’ athletic guard Dayton Davis had a hay day. The junior created many turnovers and carried Fort Madison offensively to tie the game up at 29-29 heading into break. Washington continued to be bothered by the press and a five point
The first half of the season concludes tonight for the Washington basketball teams when they meet up with Fort Madison for Southeast Conference action.
The Demon boys (4-1) have won both of their conference games by single digits with the latest being a 67-62 victory over Fairfield on Saturday. Going 22 of 30 from the line and out rebounding the Trojans 45-30 helped the Demons close out the nail biting victory. Kasen Bailey led the way with 20 points and Ethan Patterson had 19. Trashaun Willis added 12 and Lance Sobaski hauled in 15 rebounds. Fort Madison is 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the league after a 48-36 victory over Keokuk on Friday. Dayton Davis has been a steady force with 13.5 points and 10.2 rebounds a night. The Bloodhounds seem to be improved from a 6-16 campaign last year where the Demons swept them in a pair of games.
