oh, my gosh! strong storms roll through our area tonight. they produced tornado warnings, they knocked trees down and made for a wet start to this holiday weekend. good evening, i m jim vance. i m doreen gentzler. the storms came right up the i-95 corridor knocking down trees along the way. this monster was uprooted on woodside parkway near fairview road. more than 30,000 dominion, virginia, customers lost power tonight. right now that number is down to 17,000. 4,000 people in montgomery county and 2,000 in the district are still in the dark. pepco customers were largely spared this time. veronica johnson is in for doug kammerer with the latest. is it over? it is well over, jim and doreen. but as you said, right around 6:00 or so, and up until about 8:30, quite a bit of severe weather for the evening. i haven t seen any confirmed reports of tornadoes, but take a look at this out of bowie, maryland. the lower part of that cloud base sure looks like a possible wall cloud
forecast. this is 9news now. a treacherous start to a holiday weekend. take a look at the aftermath. the wind that swept through was strong enough to crack this tree practically right down the middle. and the weather caught a lot of people off guard. dozens scramble for cover as of the heavy rain comes through. topper has been tracking the whole thing. what can we expect in the morning? things have certainly quieted down. that s the good news. let s start with the damage. notice everything has a w here which means wind damage. right now there is no conformation of a tornado, although warnings were out at one time. we re going to start in the fredericksburg area and wind damage here. we re going to move up into the fairfax area near oakton. we have an oak tree about 15 inches in diameter blocking a roadway. we have that for damage. closer into town, we ve got wind gusts damage for some trees again. mainly just wind damage. and we ll go up 270 a little bit in rockville an
escorted out of a nearby mosque. the man allegedly pointed that gun at an off-duty officer and the officer fired off a couple of shots. the man was taken into custody. the imam at the mosque said the man got angry over remarks that he made to celebrate memorial day. now, what he said was, sounds like you are recruiting. isn t that what he said? yeah. now, what he didn t like what was i was saying and the day s talk was on memorial day and commemorating those who made sacrifices and i was given islamic history and in support of that. a second person was also arrested. it s not clear if anyone was hit by that gunfire. former vice presidential candidate sarah palin will kick off her one nation bus tour at this weekend s rolling thunder event on the mall. but there is some controversy involved. some organizers of the event say palin never let them know she was planning to participate. derrick ward joins us with both sides of the story. derrick? the organizers that we
