Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the basement but damage to the houses electrical wiring, as well as water and smoke damage has left the household displaced until further notice. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Witnesses say the man who was in the basement at the time of the fire left the scene on a bike. His whereabouts are unknown. As the Iowa Department of Public Safety has announced the alleged cause behind an explosion that resulted in the death of a man at the Shady Rest Motel in cedar falls last month. According to the dps the man blew out a pilot light on a Gas Appliance in a room the previous night in what a d ps report calls an alleged suicide attempt. The report from the dps also states that when the man awoke the next day he lit a cigarette that caused the large explosion. You may remember the scandal last year, in which former state employees were paid hush money. It prompted former department of Administrative Services attorney ryan lamb to quit his job. But tonight hes back under the microscope. Aaron brilbeck has the story. Its a case where the state governments rule makers. Were the rule breakers. Because of a whistle blowers tip, the state Auditors Office looked into the department of Administrative Services. Thats the state agency that manages government operations. What the audit found is that a former top attorney in the Branstad Administration was not qualified for the position that he was in. And was paid 22thousand dollars more than he should have been. Attorney ryan lamb left his job last year after a scandal involving secret settlements paid to former state employees. Essentially, hush money was given to employees with grievances.
