Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the basement but damage to the houses electrical wiring, as well as water and smoke damage has left the household displaced until further notice. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Witnesses say the man who was in the basement at the time of the fire left the scene on a bike. His whereabouts are unknown. As the Iowa Department of Public Safety has announced the alleged cause behind an explosion that resulted in the death of a man at the Shady Rest Motel in cedar falls last month. According to the dps the man blew out a pilot light on a Gas Appliance in a room the previous night in what a d ps report calls an alleged suicide attempt. The report from the dps also states that when the man awoke the next day he lit a cigarette that caused the large explosion.
