SAN ANGELO The San Angelo City Council approved a measure Tuesday to allow city manager Daniel Valenzuela to enter negotiations for purchasing the Standard-Times building.
The measure passed unanimously, 7-0, for an amount not to exceed $950,000. The building has been on the market for about a year.
San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter said the city is exploring options to turn the building into a possible site for a new police station. We are excited about the opportunity that purchasing the Standard-Times building presents to the city, Gunter said. We have known for a long time that our police department has needed a new building.

SAN ANGELO Reactions to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott s recent decision to end a statewide mask mandate and open Texas 100% a year after COVID-19 spread across the state have received mixed reactions from the public, which include San Angelo officials.
On Tuesday, March 2, 2021, Abbott issued a new executive order, which will take effect March 10 and rescind most of his earlier orders, including restrictions on business occupancy and statewide mask order from July. Texas is in a far better position now than when I issued my last executive order back in October, Abbott said Tuesday, referring to his order allowing bars to reopen under certain circumstances. Cases spiked after he eased business restrictions in the fall.

SAN ANGELO Governor Greg Abbott announced Monday that Tom Green County was one of 31 additional Texas counties approved for individual assistance by FEMA after a record-setting and deadly winter storm caused widespread damage across the state.
Last week, Abbott requested a major disaster declaration in Texas for individual assistance and public assistance from FEMA in all of its counties.
President Joe Biden on Saturday partially approved Abbott s request, declaring a major disaster in Texas and granting public assistance emergency protective measures only in all 254 counties, but individual assistance in only 77 counties, of which Tom Green County was initially left out.
