Councillors: Ipswich wants what it is paying for

Just how much time do our councillors spend doing actual council stuff? Back in the day it was pretty common, especially in country areas, to see local representatives balance what you might call “a day job” with their civic duties. I would almost go as far to say that it was encouraged – that people trusted mayors and councillors who also had a local business, or who were invested in the local region through work. But times they change. Councillors get paid a lot of money now, by most people’s standards. Even today, $120 grand a year is good money – certainly nothing to be sneezed at – and I can understand why voters expect more from councillors as a result.

Months-long works prompt closure of major road

Premium Content Subscriber only MUCH-NEEDED road surface repairs have forced shut parts of South Station Rd at Silkstone as Ipswich City Council undertakes months-long works. The stretch of road between Auld St and Rodney St, estimated to be about 400m long, is set to have sections of kerb and channel replaced, as well as its surface. While necessary, the works could prove a headache for motorists who frequent the road due to direct access to Blackstone Rd now being temporarily unavailable. Deputy Mayor Marnie Doyle, however, was quick to assure there were alternate traffic diversions in place via Grange Rd to cater to high-volume traffic.

Claims of part time councillors on $120k plus ludicrous

Premium Content Subscriber only IPSWICH Mayor Teresa Harding has slammed accusations that fellow councillors are working “part-time” while collecting huge salaries as “absolutely ludicrous”. Councillors earn a base salary of $122,421 on top of super payments of at least $11,000 a year and a car allowance worth $19,500. Deputy Mayor Marnie Doyle earns slightly more and Cr Harding takes home $204,000 a year, or almost $4000 a week, on top of $19,300 in super and a vehicle allowance. Ipswich mayor Teresa Harding said claims councillors were only working part-time were ‘absolutely ludicrous’. The cost of councillor support officers to ratepayers is set to top $1 million with 14 positions ultimately to be filled.
