Paul Goldschmidt surpassed 1,100 RBIs with a two-run single and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 on Wednesday night. Goldschmidt put the Cardinals ahead 5-2 on his two-run hit off Kevin Kelly (4-2) during the fourth. The St. Louis slugger has 1,101 RBIs.
Yandy Díaz homered and scored three runs as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 10-6 on Sunday, taking two of three in the weekend series. Díaz and Wander Franco each had three hits and drove in two runs. “It looks like the offense is waking up a little bit,” Díaz said.
Jeremy Peña had a career-high four RBIs, Yainer Díaz and José Abreu added three apiece and the Houston Astros had their highest-scoring game of the season in a 17-4 rout of the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night. Díaz put Houston up early with a two-run shot in the second. Peña, who had two hits, made it 5-0 with a bases-loaded double in the fourth.
The slumping Tampa Bay Rays believe in themselves. The surging Baltimore Orioles won three of four between the division rivals over the weekend, taking over first place in the AL East and dropping the reeling Rays, who opened the year with 13 consecutive victories, two games off the pace. The Rays haven’t compiled one of the best marks in the majors over the last decade without being resourceful and resilient, though, which is one reason manager Kevin Cash is confident his team will rebound and finish strong as it aims for a fifth straight playoff appearance.
Gunnar Henderson and Ryan O'Hearn homered as the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Sunday to take three of four in a weekend series. The Orioles, who started July 6 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay, have a two-game lead over the Rays after winning for the 12th time in 15 games. “We just played four really good games against a really good team,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said.
