The state Office of Health Strategy ruled on Monday, that Sharon Hospital must keep its maternity unit open despite current costs and staffing challenges. Sharon Hospital’s owners, Danbury-based Nuvance Health, warned that it may well be impossible to do. Nuvance issued a statement on Tuesday in which it warned that maintaining a maternity unit in the rural Litchfield County town was unsustainable as the health system continues to struggle financially. A spokesperson said that years of low volume, coupled with increasing difficulty finding physicians and nurses to staff the unit, has made the situation tenuous. The health system said now they will be considering all options available as they reassess a path forward.
