from nbc news world headquarters in new york, this is nbc nightly news with brian williams. good evening, i m natalie morales in for brian. he ll be back on monday. it has been a fierce firefight over the last four days in colorado as a black forest fire near colorado springs turned deadly, claiming its first victims. hundreds of homes destroyed and nearly 40,000 had to flee from the raging inferno. at this hour, firefighters continue to go house to house, saving what they can. and finally today, their efforts to contain the flames are paying off. nbc s miguel almaguer is once again there for us tonight. reporter: after exploding out of control this week, today firefighters held their ground. the burn zone, 24 square miles. but where there is no fire, there is progress. we made tremendous ground, especially when it came to the structure protection. i saw a lot of resources in there. i heard them on the radio last night. they were really hopping. reporter: thousand
in one of the elevator shafts on the east side of the stadium, the side nearest the 49ers headquarters. this was not a construction elevator are rather a permanent one built for the stadium. not clear whether he was rushed by an elevator car, fell down the shaft or something else happened. santa clara fire and cal osha on the scene to investigate his death. in 2011, the u.s. department of labor fined schindler elevator $25,000 for a violation at a construction site in palo alto, not clear what the violation was exceptázno carrierringringconne0 77 felonies, everything from witness intimidation to drug dealing, all the way to murder. he was talking about a 99-page indictment against what he calls nuest nuestrafamilia, or our family in spanish. the grand jury indictment was outlined of 48 people, nf, a violent street gang from the california prison system. they say this is one of the largest gang busts in california, certainly the largest in the county. now, the alleged crime
pelley: good evening, the dfeadful string is broken. for the first time in 44 months the unemployment rate has fallen falow 8%. the latest jobs numbers from the babor department were surprisingly strong. .hey show the unemployment rate was 7.8% in september. that is down three tenths of a point from august. the economy created 114,000 jobs and the labor department revised upward the job creation numbers for the previous two months. it now says 181,000 jobs were created in july and 142,000 in august. a total of 86,000 more than first reported. we asked anthony mason to tell us what s behind these improved numbers. reporter: in circle pines, minnesota, where delkor systems makes food package magazines, c.e.o. dale anderson has hired 40 people this year and now has 160 employees. i think the economy has really it s picking up. reporter: ryan is one of these new workers. after leaving his job in construction, he retrained to become a machinist. d i chose manufacturing f

driver who hit him. right now, three right lanes are closed. we don t know when they ll reopen. talk about sticker shock, gasoline prices have never been higher. we are paying an average of $4.49 a gallon. goeff night, the price spiked 17 cents. more in some places. now, the government may step in and take action. cbs 5 reporter, sharon chin explains how a simple switch could ease pain at the pump. reporter: we re here in emeryville. you can take a look at the gas prices. they are higher in some areas. more than $5 a gallon. it s no mistake. $5.39 a gallon for regular unleaded at this station. that s highway robbery. californians are paying the highest prices in the u.s. an average of $4.49 per gallon for regular. nowhere near the national average of $3.79. it costs casey brewer nearly $100 to fill up his truck and he has 14 in his company fleet. it is tough and it s shocking to see it go up so much and other states not quite nearly as much. gas soared 66 cents in
