The government in Assam state, led by India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), argued the new law was a result of a popular demand for “general education” in Islamic schools, known locally as madrassas.

GUWAHATI: The Assam Madrassa Teachers Association (AMTA) has opposed The Assam Repealing Bill 2020 which was tabled on the first day of the Assam Legislative Assembly Winter Session on Monday. AMTA president Fazaluddin Bashani and general secretary Amirul Islam stressed that the Bill will scrap all State-run madrassas and convert them into general schools.
They expressed that they didn t believe the Education Minister when he made the announcement to shutdown State-run madrassas as the madrassa education has been going on in the country even before independence.
